Mystery compound in beer fights cancer
Seems that research into this topic is warranted at NZNOG. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6895
errr, "the DNA damage to their liver, lungs and kidneys was reduced by up to 85% if the mice drank non-alcoholic beer instead of water" they make non-alcoholic beer? why? Andy Linton wrote:

If it's non-alcoholic, is it really beer? And in any case, would NZNOGers have any interest in researching this "non-alcoholic beer"? I thought the point of beer consumption was to achieve the enlightened (read altered) mental state necessary to understand things such as BGP? On Fri, 21 Jan 2005, Dave - Dave.net.nz wrote:

yeh I bet that tastes as bas as Dunedin water does in some places too I'm sure if the said mice drank water the damage would be increased by about 85% ;) although can't be as bad as auck. Cheers Dan Dave - Dave.net.nz wrote:

After some discussion, my colleagues and I have established the existence of this "non-alcoholic beer". It appears to be an American product, sold in large volumes under the trade name Budweiser :P On Fri, 21 Jan 2005, Dave - Dave.net.nz wrote:

Actually, according to this paper at Michigan State University: http://www.msu.edu/course/lbs/145/luckie/inquiries2003/seven.html Budweiser has an alcohol content of 4.9% (though some Anheuser-Busch web pages claim 5.0), which puts it in excess of Tui, Speights, DB Draught, etc. Though most of the Monteith's line seems to be >= Bud. Mind you, I'm not suggesting I would prefer to drink Bud; merely making the pedantic observation that it is less deserving of the non-alcoholic moniker than much of what I find in the local New World cooler. I only drank Bud as a teenager, and that because when you're under the legal age you drink what you can get... As to the original topic, I look forward to joining Mr. Linton in further assisting the research regarding this mystery compound during NZNOG... :) Regards, Ed Hintz ed(a)hintz.org
Imagine the benefits if they'd used *real* beer... Keith Davidson Dave wrote:
