Peering exchange in the Wairarapa?
Hi Guys, I'm just wondering if there is any interest at all in having a peering exchange of some kind in the Wairarapa. I know I've been thinking about such a beast for a while, but at the moment there's only a couple of ISP-like entities (that I know of) who might possibly be interested. WISE Net would be happy to house such a beast if it could be shown that there was sufficient interest, although I'm not sure we're exactly what you might call neutral territory :) So really what I'm asking is, is there anyone else out there? Do you want to peer with us? With others? Have you got a network you want to connect to others with in the Wairarapa at a central place? Raise your hands now, or forever shall your cat5 be under-utilised :) Cheers, Blair Harrison Systems Administrator WISE Net | http://wise.net.nz

Good on you for raising this. I'm sure the others will see the economic sense in what you are proposing and approach you. Do you think that you could talk Telecom and TelstraClear into peering locally for the Schoolzone and other school network traffic, if nothing else? Given that Telecom runs SchoolZone entirely on RFC1918 address space I don't think we want that anywhere near a public peering exchange. Regards -- Matt Brown matt(a)mattb.net.nz Mob +64 275 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz

I think with your connection to WIX, it is your customers who would seek the peering experience, both locally and with Wellington peers.

I thought you had a switch or two there already, <grin>.

I'm sure there are, and the response from Mike is confirmation of this.

Despite recent presentations that would characterise customers as "eyeballs" or "little black squares," I think you will find that is consumers, rather than operators who will respond to the opportunity to peer. After all, wouldn't cellular operators prefer that we couldn't speak to each other except via their metered services?
