I'm not sure whether they are using an old version of the .nz zone file (although these haven't been available for at least 18 months), or they have some scripting engine pulling the information of the general WhoIs.

It's not an old one and they didn't get it from Domainz. One of the domains I got a note about was only registered a few months ago via Freeparking. As an aside, this will work on some people. My wife (who is not unclueful) was opening the mail, handed me the nonvoices and said "Bills from Domainz. Do you want me to pay them online?" People will read what they think they see, no matter how much clue you throw at them.
