Hi, How long does it take for changes to the .co.nz domains take to be reflected in whois and dns ? I am not native to the region, so don't have existing experience with this. A client of mine registered a .nz domain for a project of theirs through melbourneit. I changed the dns servers on their site, and it said that the change has been submitted, but 'dig ns theirdomain @202.46.190.130' still shows the original nameservers, as does whois. Any clues ? cheers -a

Hi,
How long does it take for changes to the .co.nz domains take to be reflected in whois and dns ? Any clues ?

The .nz DNS zone push occurs at the following times each day 3am, 7 am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm, and 11pm. So, any updates you do to nameservers will take effect after the next zone push. Provided your registrar is communicating correctly with the SRS, the info should be updated in the whois pretty much instantaneously. If there's a problem with the SRS for whatever reason, then the update may be delayed. Cheers, Blair

The zone push actually happens on the hour, every hour (source: http://www.dnc.org.nz/story/30094-31-1.html#zone) Remember however that the .nz zone has a TTL of 1 hour (3600s), so even though you have made a change to your authoritative nameservers, it may take up to one hour after the zone push for all recursive nameservers to see the change.
Provided your registrar is communicating correctly with the SRS, the info should be updated in the whois pretty much instantaneously. If there's a problem with the SRS for whatever reason, then the update may be delayed.
Correct. Whois information is live, so any change made with your registrar is visible instantly. -- simon
Hi Team, Be aware also, that while the whois itself is live, your registrar may 'cache' updates, and do them in a batch to the srs every 15minutes or so :) Stephen Simon Green wrote:

Thank you for the advice everybody. I think the nz systems must dislike my nameservers (ns2.org.uk ns0.us) - which have valid 'A' resource records that resolve, but they're domain names in their own right. Or do I need glue records in the nz zone for these nameservers before I can use them ?

Records in the NZ zone (or daughter zones) for ns0.us and ns2.org.uk would be out-of-zone data, and would be ignored by most authority server implementations. The fact that ns0.us is delegated from the US zone (and ns2.org.uk similarly from ORG.UK) should not prevent their use as nameservers. The apex A/AAA records in both case will be used, if present. Hi Andy,
a useful thing to check after making changes is 'whois
yourdomain.co.nz' - changes to the NZ registry show up in whois almost
immediately[1], and you can then be confident the next DNS zone push
will get the correct information.
Cheers,
Nic.

Did you check the whois on http://www.nic.uk/ UK Registrars eg fasthosts.co.uk always say changes take 24 hours to take effect. In reality it used to take 3 days sometimes, just depended on the ISP.
