Noticed on: http://snurl.com/1638 that Xtra "isn't considering moving to" IPv6 and also claims that "none of the ISPs are", presumably meaning the NZ ones. I know this is not correct, and that Joe Abley and Clear were at it back in '98 already, with the Uni of Canterbury. Where are things at with IPv6 in NZ now though? -- Juha Saarinen
Chris Hellberg (sp?) tried to get a NZ v6 over v4 IX going, last I checked my tunnel to there was down. We were using freenet6 tunnels... has anyone actually gotten 'real' address space from APNIC? Nathan Ward Juha Saarinen wrote:

You can always use 6to4 address ( RFC 3068 , 2002::/16 ) if you have an ipv4 allocation. We're checking all new equipment is ipv6 compatible these days. I've also got the words "ipv6 road map" on my todo list. BTW: Apparently telecom's management data network (for managing switches via telnet) is "broken" right now, so some updates may be delayed. -- Simon Lyall. | Newsmaster | Work: simon.lyall(a)ihug.co.nz Senior Network/System Admin | Postmaster | Home: simon(a)darkmere.gen.nz Ihug Ltd, Auckland, NZ | Asst Doorman | Web: http://www.darkmere.gen.nz

'in the near future' Would all depends on ones definition of 'near future'
It is probably also worth noting that the article implies that v6 would fix the problem... This isn't really true as v4 will still have to be available.. Nathan Ward

From a personal point of view.. ive seen ISPs run dry on IPs a couple of times in my ISP career, and ive never heard IPv6 mentioned as a result.... Interesting that it was mentioned, given theres still sufficient IPv4 space around and that We generally get our IPs via APNIC, which is a potential bottleneck... ? I was suprised at the mention of v6 at all. Mark. At 10:57 16/04/2003 +1200, Nathan Ward wrote:

Yes, but running out of address space has more to do with the number of hoops APNIC want you to jump through, rather than anything else. I've seen a /20 application rejected because they required additional clarification on what one /28 server block was for in the range requested. I'm not looking forward to doing a v6 allocation request - hopefully I can delegate that :-) Gordon

Probably more likely it was rejected because APNIC asked for additional clarification, and didn't get it.

At least with a v6 application you probably only have to do it once :) Joe

I had a play with it back in sept'02. Related thread on nzlug - http://www.linux.net.nz/lists/NZLUG/2002/09/0585.html /sw
