I recon their misleading letters should be taken up with the commerce commission. Felix Tsang
Has anyone got a technical solution that we can discuss which will stop this sort of thing? No? Then can it be moved to some other list? Why? NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 7. Postings of a political, philosophical or legal nature are discouraged.
Howdy, just seen the news post at

!opendocument . It says they are trying to track down where the domains got
harvested from and go on to say this was probably an old list. Well one of
my clients who only registered his domain about 2 months ago, just received
one of these messages. So this goes to tell me that it's not an old list.

Surely do. I suggest a judicious application of clue-by-four to the offender. How is this technical? The LARTing should be done by geeks, of course. _______________________________________________ Nznog mailing list Nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/nznog
I have today received 5 letters from The Domain Registry of America, Melbourne (posted in UK) asking me to re-register some of my domains as they are due to expire - so they are at it also. Ian Cousins Wellington

Got one here as well, and what bothers me is that although the domain in question is registered under my own name, the letter was addressed to my company, which doesn't appear in whois data anywhere. Somebody's been trawling... -- Juha Saarinen

The letter I recieved had our address with 'eCentre' in it. The only place where we have our address with 'eCentre' as opposed to 'E-Centre' is our .nz whois records. (esphion.co.nz for instance).
Hi Barry, I wrote the CW story on Domain Names NZ... The DNC said: "They've obviously got hold of an old list but they've also been targeting .com names and some new .co.nz ones as well." so they're aware that there are new names listed recently as well as those on an old list (presumably identified by having dropped off the newer list?). Domain Registry of Europe/America/Canada/Australia has been busy elsewhere also. The Register in the UK carries this story: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/32209.html "The Dutch hosting provider Deinternetman and its American partner Register.com ... ponder legal action against Domain Registry of Europe (DRoE) for sending their customers letters urging them to renew their domain contracts." Sounds like the Commerce Commission is onto the Aussie crowd already - in conjunction with the ACCC so hopefully something will be done soon.
