one of the issues I am having is it would appear you have to have an
Australian business number to be able to register the domain *.com.au?
The reason we are trying to register this kind of domain is a couple of
customers are based in Aussie and dont like the fact that .nz means we can
do it better than them :P

You will REQUIRE an ABN (Aus business number) or ACN (Aus companies number), either of which will take you time and bother to get (And a fair whack of cash in the case of an ACN) and an Australian street address. The people who administer the com.au domain registry are notoriously slow, bureaucratic and inflexible. I think you are only allowed one domain per company as well....though this may have changed. This is probably why many *Australian* companies by-pass it / don't promote it - and just use something like: www.nz.anz.com ....for a real-world example.
