Nah man - what do you think we are. We did have a flag and a pair of fluffy dice on the top of the whip though. And we made sure that we had a wing on the back as high as the antenna. Just to give us more down force. We also put a sticker on the back saying "Type R" because that adds about 5dbi to the antenna. We also suspect that the soft toys and car shaped air fresheners that we had attached to the dash added some more power to the whole operation. Next time we will have to do a bad job of lowering the car and see if that helps. =)

I can vouch for some of this. I gave Si and Dean a ride home. Simple enough, its on my way. So picture the front of my van, 3 largish fellows, Deans laptop (open and running of course), GPS on the dash, Si with the omni out the window, 25MW load on my cigarette lighter plug and the lappy going BOING everytime we hit a WLAN. Next time I put them in the back...... On a serious note external access to these LANS is so easy. Apart from sniffing LANS across the harbour, I've found that they're wide open. Best example (location secret). I was asked to look into a WLAN that was slow. After doing the usual and finding the problem (hardware limited to 800k) I decided to sniff. Sitting in the van down the road, with only a Lucent card (no ext aerial), I could get an IP and wander round the LAN. So then I tried Freebase (the Apple manager) (it wasn't Apple kit) and the usual password and presto I'm managing their box. The customer was pleased I could tell them their password - they had forgotten. These things are very cool, but just leave you wide open for traffic losses. richard.naylor(a)citylink.co.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Someone didn't get the joke, methinks. Yea - made it worthwhile didn't it ;-)
We're talking 1.8 MILLION amps running through that cigarette lighter socket. I actually have a 500 amp shunt on the battery for the batt capacity meter and keep the engine running. Other vans carry generators. I use an inverter for 230 on the road but it won't boil a jug. It complained when I used the
Confession time - I actually melted the fuse holder that feeds the lights on the roof of my van TWICE. :-( Had to a serious wiring upgrade last week end. The problem is that the road rules have tightened up for people who work on the streets (no I'm not a "street worker", but it probably pays better). So I started off with a flashing light. People just don't see them, so I added a second - they still don't see them. Then I added floodlights which makes night work easier up poles. Trouble is all up you're pulling 250 watts of lights - and the whole fuse carrier just melts. Just imagine it, nice quiet night in Wgtn. (yer right) Go climb pole with flashers and floodlights (being nice and safe). Get to top of pole and poof out go all the lights - bugger ! Have to climb down thru the trolley wires and round teh Saturn cables in the dark. power drill last week. It depends on if you are running WEP or not. The lacency has alot to do with the Distance between points and especially how much cable/type of cable you have to the Antenna. With 1-4Km distances you can get around 2-4ms between points easily. If you are getting 20ms there is something wrong :-) Speed.. Maybe 5M at most.
