Re: Need for .nz WHOIS server

I'll echo the call for a whois request in the form Joe suggested. I'll also note that this is not a new request. I and a number of others asked for this from Waikato when they ran the name registration, later when ISOCNZ took over the administration before Domainz was created and again since Domainz was in the picture.
So we do share some concerns after all :-)
I look forward to being able to use it!
As a matter of interest, what would you suggest the main purpose of having a .nz WHOIS is? regards Peter Mott Chief Enthusiast 2Day Internet Limited http://www.2day.net.nz -/- --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

I don't think there's necessarily a benefit in having a dedicated NZ whois
server. I would like to see domain registration information published on
a whois server somewhere, however.
I can approach APNIC and ask whether they are willing to accept the domain:
records on their server -- domainz would still have to populate them, of
course, so there's little point in asking unless there is widespread interest.
Reason for wanting published registration information is principally for
finding out contact details, in cases of (a) network abuse, (b) spam or
(c) operational problems. Plus it's interesting to poke around in :)

Is there any particular reason for wanting this in WHOIS format since the information is available via the web? http://domainz.waikato.ac.nz/cgi-bin/DNZ-REGISTER?domain_name=DOMAIN.NAME cheers mark --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Aah, I didn't actually notice it was on the web.
In principal though, I prefer the idea of records being available in a
standard format, as it makes them easy to parse with standard tools.
RIPE-181 is as close to a standard as we have right now.
I think the correct way to do it would be to populate a ripe-181 database
(accessible by whois) with authoritative data, and to make the web interface
either by parsed snapshots of the ripe-181 database, or via a cgi interface
which performs the whois and formats the results for html.
This is more of an architectural argument than a practical one, however :)
