fibre and internet providers in Melbourne?
Good afternoon If anyone has any recommendations (or advice on who to steer clear of) on internet and/or fibre providers over in Melbourne can you please contact me off-list? We're in Tullamarine if that helps. Cheers Thom -- Thom Hooker Director of Operations SMX Ltd http://smx.co.nz
Hey Thom... Sheesh be patient ;-) Firstly.. Tullamarine in Melbourne is like.. ummmmmm barely in Melbourne, it i where the airport is.. some 20km or so away from the city in a not very businessy area... more industrial. I am sure the airport has a ton of fibre, but splicing into that could be fun. Is the DC address you gave me a recognised DC or is it a home made one? ...Skeeve -- Skeeve Stevens, CEO/Technical Director eintellego Pty Ltd - The Networking Specialists skeeve(a)eintellego.net / www.eintellego.net Phone: 1300 753 383, Fax: (+612) 8572 9954 Cell +61 (0)414 753 383 / skype://skeeve -- NOC, NOC, who's there?

Sounds a lot like Mascot. You have heard of Equinix, right? Or even Optus (technically St Peters, but normally called Mascot) :) Is the DC address you gave me a recognised DC or is it a home made one? The only DC I can think of that used to be in/near Tullamarine was the old Ansett one, although I've got no idea what became of it post Ansett. Scott.

Yes -you've got not a lot of choice there. From memory you can have awesome australian DSL 1, which has a maximum upload speed of 384 kbit. Or ethernet over fibre, for which the install cost is ~$8k AU. There's probably not a lot of wireless operators in the area either - its the neighbourhood of the airport. If you do find something useful, please let me know off-list. -- Criggie

ADSL2+ is fairly common these days in Australia. Between the various providers most metro and large cities/towns have one or more providers. We have our own ports - so I get 13Mbps/2Mbps at my distance from the exchange. At Tullamarine ADSL2+ is definately available. MMC

Yes, ADSL2+ is readily available, but... Knowing Thom and SMX, if they're doing what I think they're doing, then residential-grade services aren't going to cut it. I think he's talking about a real pipe complete with SLAs and all that. Thom, can you confirm? Cheers Richard On Fri, June 12, 2009 18:31, Matthew Moyle-Croft wrote:

I've asked AUSNOG community if anyone can figure out which DC is being built in that area. The problem is that although they are apparently near the Telstra Exchange, most fibre, apart from Telstra's isn't delivered from exchanges. If they aren't close to another fibre path then copper MetroE might be optional which can achieve 40mb or so in some cases. Once I have some responses about that particular area I will know more... It looks like some old Glass factory from Google streetmaps if it is right... so who knows. ...Skeeve -- Skeeve Stevens, CEO/Technical Director eintellego Pty Ltd - The Networking Specialists skeeve(a)eintellego.net / www.eintellego.net Phone: 1300 753 383, Fax: (+612) 8572 9954 Cell +61 (0)414 753 383 / skype://skeeve -- NOC, NOC, who's there?
