Telecom interconnection
I believe this is a followup to something that was mentioned at NZNOG. ---- Telecom to restart IP interconnection talks Telecom is signalling a restart to interconnection talks ahead of a planned December 2011 launch for IP interconnection charging. The incumbent philosophy that everyone should pay for interconnect to their network is really quite maddening. Especially when they are willing to give it away overseas. Good luck with it all. http://www.peeringdb.com/view.php?asn=4648 Peering Policy Information Peering Policy URL General Policy Open Multiple Locations Not Required Ratio Requirement No Contract Requirement Not Required MMC On 17/02/2010, at 7:30 PM, Simon Lyall wrote: I believe this is a followup to something that was mentioned at NZNOG. ---- Telecom to restart IP interconnection talks Telecom is signalling a restart to interconnection talks ahead of a planned December 2011 launch for IP interconnection charging. Gents, Remember were not the only Provider to withdraw from peering and even though we are here listening, openly discussing the peering situation and providing a solution, we still wear the rod?
From the information I have been given on the peering product, Telecom Wholesale offer free local peering here in NZ. There is a domestic transit charge if you choose to use local peering domestic transit portion of the product. But as far as I am aware there is no charge for network interconnect.
Unfortunately the Wholesale guys are out team building today but they are more than willing to answer any questions. Let me know & I'll happily put you in touch? Part of the issue here is that while Telecom does offer free peering, operators have to pay to get to Telecom's network to do so, and there are charges associated with having routers in the exchange, etc. It's only free for a given value thereof. I suspect I speak for much of the industry when I say it would be pragmatic of Telecom to peer at established exchanges (even if only advertising routes for that region), which would make access by operators very much easier, as all major networks already peer at these exchanges, and often have equipment in the relevant buildings for private interconnection as well. Also, correct me if I'm wrong here Greg, but I think to peer with Telecom you have to do business with Telecom Wholesale, and that this requires a certain business volume; i.e., it would not be possible to buy peering only. This will shut a large number of small networks out of opportunities to peer with Telecom. And yes, Telecom are not the only network we should be frustrated with in this regard; point taken. ;) Erin Salmon Managing Director - Unleash Phone: 03 365 1273 Mobile: 0275 877 913 From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Greg Soffe Sent: 18 February 2010 4:19 p.m. To: Matthew Moyle-Croft; Simon Lyall Cc: nznog Subject: Re: [nznog] Telecom interconnection Gents, Remember were not the only Provider to withdraw from peering and even though we are here listening, openly discussing the peering situation and providing a solution, we still wear the rod? product. Currently only Telecom Broadband traffic is 'Peered' Global-gateway customers are not currently part of the peering scheme. Hopefully that will change in the future.
