Repeat: NO ONE who got emailed today was added to any mailing list !! (Without requesting it). It was ONLY AN INVITATION to a small group of targetted people, who's email addresses were in my address book. Please people, with p-pills, mortgage applications, pirated MS software yada yada, why the need to take out your frustrations on a local known specialised e-commerce business? Despite having my email address all over the place, I receive maybe once a month only an unsolicited professional email offering me something relevant and I find many of these useful or I simply delete. I have publically apologised several times and still I get emails suggesting that I should "apologise". Could it be that this is way out of proportion? I am still sorry and disapointed that some people have taken this in an unintended way. Michael Hallager
Rather remove everyone you manually added to the mailing list and let them find your website on their own, if they want to be added they will opt in.

Hello all.
I have just gone through and added a few names to the no-contact list although only about 50% of the people posting so far in this subject so far were ever
emailed in the first place. At last count, about 5 or 6.
The actions of some in threatening mail blocks and in continuing this on NZNOG has made it rather hard for me to asertain who would like to be added. I have already discussed it with others, some who would rather keep the pot boiling... for no obvious reason.... I have tried to sort this out with as many people as possible.
So I repeat - contact me directly with your details and it will happen.
I sincerely apologise again to all who were offended.

Well, Michael, three years ago, the prospect of receiving unsolicited commercial email didn't appeal to you: http://www.unixathome.org/adsl/archives/2001_09/0301.html Why should your unsolicited commercial email appeal to anyone else? -- Juha
I have never posted any "for sale" adds to the NZNOG. I suggest that you take it up with the known culprits for that sort of thing. Michael

Could you stop: a) top-posting b) full-quoting please? Never said you posted "for sale" ads (not "adds") to NZNOG. It appears you have spammed NZNOGers however. -- Juha

A few NZNOGers have received an email. Out of these few, even fewer have complained. I have just received some complaints from people whom in in all likelyhood have a short memory for names/people they have had contact with. However 50% of those who have complained never received anything in the first place because I check their names and NOTHING..... comes up. Also some people are starting to post myths and fake stories up here now. There is no spamming, no email harvesting, no nonsense, no conspiracy. As much as it might suit some peoples egos to continue on with this tirade, I have done everything I can and apologised several times. I really don't deserve the crap that I receive from some people - I hope they never make an error of judgement in case they are on the receiving end of their own bad attitude. Complain to me, yes - abuse/threaten me, no. // Michael Hallager Director || Head geek || Making IT work. Funnily enough I received the e-mail from Michael that everyone is moaning about. This e-mail didn't annoy me, I didn't even read it! The subject line didn't interest me so the message was Deleted and forgotten about. What does annoy me though is the 30 + USELESS messages in my Inbox from Fucktards from this list intent on having their pathetic opinions herd. No one cares that you are stuck out in the back room rarely spoken to by other staff. There is a reason your boss neglects showing you any form of appreciation. In spite of that, NZNOG is not the Mail List to restore your mundane egos. Do not reply to this message, which means: Do not abuse me, Do not try to correct any spelling mistakes, Do not try to justify yourself and Do not misuse my advice. I repeat: No. One. Cares.
I repeat: No. One. Cares.
Whooooohoooo, Saved me writing the Rant. Rob Someone who has dwelled here for a long time, but doesnt say much. (*first page was funny, second was a little worrying. 3rd I wondered why I was still reading.)

So each of us who were spammed by you now have to respond individually to this list to show that it was more than a "small number"?
Please people, with p-pills, mortgage applications, pirated MS software yada yada, why the need to take out your frustrations on a local known specialised e-commerce business?
Because Michael, you are a spammer and your spam is as obnoxious as any of the other spams that you refer to.
Despite having my email address all over the place, I receive maybe once a month only an unsolicited professional email offering me something relevant and I find many of these useful or I simply delete.
So because you choose to respond positively to spam, you: a) Think that you have the right to spam others b) Don't mind getting more spam yourself since you help spammers success
I have publically apologised several times and still I get emails suggesting that I should "apologise".
You spammed me, personally. You have not apologised to me personally. You have said that I have to get in touch with you in order to get my name off your mailing list. That is not the way I operate. I have lodged spam compaints with your upstream provider and your registrar.
Could it be that this is way out of proportion? I am still sorry and disapointed that some people have taken this in an unintended way.
No, it is not way out of proportion. If you choose to harvest email addresses from a mailing list and use those addresses to propogate spam, then you must face the consequences from people who hate spam. For my part, I will inform as many people as I can that they should never deal with networkstuff or Michael Hallager on the basis that he is a spammer. <plonk> Keith Davidson

Well, I'm not sorry I called Michael on this but I have one thing to say... Sheee-it! If I ever make a stupid public mistake on this list, please let me have the good sense to publically and promptly apologise. Cheers - Neil G.

Soliciting E-Mail addresses you have harvested from a mailing list that has nothing to do with you is wrong. Just be thankful there are currently no laws against this sort of thing. If you have a prior business relationship with said people then things may have been different but using the nznog mailing list to send invitations to join your own mailing list is asking for trouble. (I'm just repeating as you really dont seem to have gotten it yet)

Oh, so adding $random_address to my address book gives me permission to send them unsolicited mail ? gee.. I really dont think so.

It all becomes clear.. Simply because _you_ contribute to the spam problem by "finding some useful" does not mean the rest of the world shares your views. Thankyou for confirming that you are as much a part of the spam problem as the spammers themselves. You should have known better. Just admit this, hell, you should have admitted it as soon as you started to get complaints. or.. why not just carry on and prove to us that you really ARE an "asshat" (to use someone elses terminology) - I mean, we have nothing better to do.. really. -- Steve.
1. You are making a false claim below. 2. You were never emailed. I have just checked. Michael

Well, I personally don't think he will get it at all. I think the best outcome we can hope for from this farcical display by Michael is that no-one else with a brain on this list will EVER make this mistake. Cheers - N. PS. Oh, could I put some money on MH picking up the logically possible interpretation above that "no-one _else_ with a brain" refers to him having a brain, and replying to the list with a comment to that effect? Brains of spammers huh? PPS. Michael, please don't take any of my comments personally - I don't even know you. I do take serious issue with you acting like a spammer but for all I know you could be a great guy in real life.

I don't take it personally. I wish other people wouldn't either. Question: what spammer would come on NZNOG to face up to these complaints?
