Hi all, I'm doing a bit of a review on some of the sites we're mirroring on ftp.clear.net.nz, in an attempt to keep the disk utilisation a little more under control. We're currently pulling down a bunch of things; the main disk-consumers are: ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD (4M without packages or 2.x) ftp.openbsd.org:/pub/OpenBSD (1M, 2.5 only) ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux (5M without "software" tree) ftp.redhat.com:/pub/redhat (5M without srpms, 5.2 + 6.0 only) ftp.debian.org:/debian (6M without potato) Now, it seems to me that there's little point in mirroring content if there are other people in NZ already doing it -- for example, if there was a good debian mirror somewhere else, I'd be happy to replace the CLEAR Net debian mirror with a text file which says "see ftp.xxxx.yy.nz for this mirror" if it meant I could pull something else down that wasn't already in the country (like NetBSD, which was there but which I removed to make space for everything else). So, here's the question: does anybody know of other locations in NZ where the archives above are already mirrored? the above is also at ftp://ftp.citylink.co.nz/pub/linux/ Is this supposed to be common knowledge? Si? Consider filtering the source distribution, and maybe some of the more arcane architiectures - currently we carry slink and potato for i386 and sparc, and the archive is only 3.6Gb <abject grovel follows> Joe, if you have disk space problems (rather than bandwidth/cost issues), would you consider running a private FTP proxy for other sites doing mirroring? The Citylink server has always been only a few strokes of the cost cutters pen from oblivion - we'd happily fess up with the disk space for a full Debian mirror if we didn't have to pay some fairly hefty traffic bills. You could limit access by time and source/dest IP to avoid abuse. <grovel off>

Yep, it was in the mirrors.txt for Debian for several years, it's more commonly now accessed as http://linux.wellington.net.nz/debian , or ftp://linux.wellington.net.nz/pub/linux/debian for those recidivists who haven't upgraded to apt. and also http://linux.wellington.net.nz/debian-non-US for the munitions. Aah, good one. I'll do some trimming.

MmmMMMmmMm! Are you asking for free off-peak transit? I will check with the commerical people :) :) You're more than welcome to update your mirror from ftp.clear.net.nz before you update it from the US -- that should cut down your bills (to zero, assuming we're both mirroring a similar amount of stuff). Our mirror updates more-or-less all day on a rolling basis, but its international traffic is de-prioritised which means it updates more quickly at night than it does during the day.

I think the concept of you buying disk for us is interesting :) If you're serious, I can get a quote for some NetApp disk for you, which you can keep telehoused for $0/month in one of our filers. Sunsite.net.nz seems to carry both of these (plus Slackware), and what looks like kernel.org's kernel tree as well.
