Strange NZ Domain Names and Contents
I was looking on Google this morning and came across these strange groups of .NZ domain names as below. Most of them are just recently been registered. (Maybe they are domains which have just become available from others who didn't want them and they where picked up to hopefully to get hits. The name of the sites have nothing to do with anything which is on the sites and all they do is link to lots of places and banners. I can't see anything really illegal on them (apart from linking to know spam/buy viagra etc online sites). Just a heads up for people. Does the NZ Internet Community want people registering 100's of generic .nz domain names in the future to just to get hits and advertise others? I'd ask the converse question: Do you want some group of "earnest and worthy" people deciding what domain names you or I can register?

Not exactly.. but see what they do in Australia. (Not saying they are right). You cannot register "Generic Domain Names" and the domain name has to have something to do with the Registered Company/Product/Service you dealing with. These people are using previous registered domain names and using their "good faith" in bringing people to the site People seeing its a .co.nz domain name might think its Legal to buy the stuff from the country the domain name is registered like from http://www.infobrok.co.nz/ Also good examples are www.pharmacycare.co.nz and http://www.discountmeds.co.nz/. Some people would think that its legal to buy the drugs from these sites in NZ (alot of people think its if a .co.nz then its a company running in New Zealand), but all they are are illegal drugs which come from Mexico or alike. (You order.. they write the prescription and they send it with the drugs - which may or may not be even what you are thinking you are buying). Its up to the Registrar if they take the $$ from the people who are selling these stuff overseas and normally none of these sites have real names/addresses or alike registered as the owner anyway. Then surely thats their own stupidity. If youre attempting to import/buy drugs from a website, without first checking the legality of it, then theres no one at fault but yourself. No changes in the resgitration of domains process is going to protect stupid people from themselves. Perhaps instead a more proactive approach would be for every ISP to send an email to their users asking "Would you buy drugs from a website?" and cancel the account of anyone who replies Yes.

normally none of these sites have real names/addresses or alike registered as the owner anyway.
And that is a far more significant issue. By registering domains in the New Zealand registry, and claiming German addresses, the criminals have a reasonable chance that nobody in Wellington will know whether claimed contact details in Munich are credible - and they are probably totally bogus. The contact email, on Gmail - untraceable ... the contact phone number a cellphone, which (being GSM) could be roaming almost anywhere in the world that has GSM. The main objective here is anonymity, given that what the criminals are doing is illegal in most of the countries where they are operating. See: http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/13703251.htm (Item five on that page) for an example of why their anonymity matters! Richard
Interesting observation. Of course, our local Internet community has had a long held tenet of offering a "first come first served" registration process for .nz and the intimation below that some form of control should be put in place would require a significant change to current .nz policies.
