History of the Internet in New Zealand
Hi all, InternetNZ has commissioned Keith Newman to write a history of the Internet in New Zealand. The book will go to the publishers later this year. I have read the first few chapters and it is a fantastic read (I look forward to reading it all). He is near the final stages of writing and is now in search of photographs to help document the history. Can you help? If you have a photo(s) that could be of use – please contact Keith (wordman(a)wordworx.co.nz) or myself. And of course we will give you credit in the publication for allowing us to use the image. We are very eager to hear from you! I suspect that libel laws will make the book a less interesting read than it could be, stuff like: Blocking rival companies, DOSing rival companies, Stealing bandwidth, In house media and porn servers, broke companies selling assets to new companies and reopening overnight, trading while insolvent, hackers posting customer lists ( at least two incidents) , of course all manner of sexual, alcohol and drug hi-jinks (some online), nighttime asset grabs, cucumbers, Girl on IRC -> Customer database -> phone, credit card fraud by companies, serial spammers, general corporate skulduggery, interesting sources of finance, interesting routing tricks, spamming rival customers bases, lawsuits by the dozen ( domainz, planet, Alan Brown *2 , Iconz wellington ), airmiles, $5,000 bills to home customers, hitman, hacker a in Star Wars tie, etc. will probably not be included. But I'm sure other interesting stuff happened too. Note: About 3/4s of the above occurred at companies I was not working for at the time or have never worked for and at least 2 have happened in the last 12 months. My knowledge of most is 3rd hand ( except the "hacker in the Star Wars tie" ). Some of them have appeared in the press though. OK, If that's not actually the foreword to the InternetNZ History, then it should be. Cheers - N... Ps. I sense an "Unauthorised history of the Internet in NZ" coming up :-) -----Original Message----- From: Simon Lyall [mailto:simon(a)darkmere.gen.nz] Sent: Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:01 p.m. To: nznog Cc: Keith Newman Subject: Re: [nznog] History of the Internet in New Zealand On Thu, 19 Jul 2007, Susi Fookes wrote:

See, before I read this bit and some specific exclusions, I was about to reply and say "And that's just IHUG!" but of course I would just have been joking, like LOLCATS. And of course Simon is merely expressing his personal opinion with his pastiche of possibly made up (and possibly totally true) events that may not (or totally may) have happened. It's all subjective, really. Don't sue him. JSR --
