On a related subject.... http://nz.wirelessanarchy.com/ this might be of interest to people, maybe, perhaps. Personally, I can't see it really taking off until/unless bandwidth pricing for decent speed connections goes flatt(er). And, for those interested in such things, http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/wirelesscommnet/ might be an interesting book to investigate. Still on the same subject, anyone know, offhand, of a retailer that sells SMC wireless gear? Regards Andrew "no, not that one" Garrett At 12:02 PM 1/15/02 +1100, Dean wrote:

Could we do some practical workshops on this issue... I would like to get BBC World multicast throughout New Zealand and I can supply it as a legitimate multicast feed for the workshop... Since 1998 I have been Licensed by BBC World to Netcast this 24 hour Video News Channel and have done so using Real media as well as having Windows Media Servers... Multicast is something practical that you Network Operators can bring to the New Zealand... Its a disgrace that it is not widely available by now so please lets show some Kiwi initiative and makeit a reality not just a meeting of words.
From 1998 onwards I have had multicast working from time to time on Xtra's dial in network, this required radius permission's to be set for each user requiring this facility... I also watched it working in trial on Redback Adsl Gear in early 2000 without problems... So this is do-able...and until it widely publically available we do not have a fully working Internet1 in New Zealand...
Michael Sutton www.awacs.co.nz (cv site with links to work I have undertaken) I welcome offline discussion... Any one wanting to call I can be reached on +21 305500 - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
Sure - I'd be willing to help with Juniper config and examples if people wanted to try and get multicast going. I'm sure there is someone from Cisco who would be happy to provide the same. Dean On Wed, 2002-01-16 at 10:06, Mike Sutton [ awacs ] wrote:

IHUG/ATTICA + ORCON are multicast enabled at the moment, and we (Orcon) and IHUG (as far as I know), can enable per user Multicast access per user easily enough for Dial up Access.

Knowing what radius responses back/ Telecom allowing them to turn on Multicast on Jetstream/Jetstart customers would be great. Until its able to be turned on via a broadband connection via Telcom's Network, its not very impressive as most things on Multicast are higher than Dial Up Modem Streams. Wonder if Telecom could be persuaded not to charge for multicast traffic on Jetstream...? -- Juha Take off every sig! - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

I suspect it is more likely that Osama will turn himself over to the US forces of his own volition, unless our wonderful pollie-tubbies realise that legislative intervention is desperately required (and I'm not holding my breath, even if National comes back this year). -- Matthew Poole "Ever wondered why cemetaries raise the cost of burials then blame it on the cost of living?" - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

As the RAN's (I guess) count for any traffic going to/from the user Unicast or Multicast. there would be no way of splitting this up (unless they can) Maybe (another thought), Adding a "Multicast Realm" so charging doen't matter, but people want multicast + unicast at the same time, so I think maybe its a wasted thought. I think the best would be to just say "IF ISP wants to enable multrcast for its client, send this back via radius". The other question is who supplies the bandwidth for the Multicast? At the moment Attica have a small tunnel to connect APE up to the Multicast Backbone, if we want all of NZ to have access to it including Jetstream/Jetstart, having Multiple tunnels to overseas places is a "waste". Any Ideas?? To my knowledge in the United States host ISP will charge a small premium (say 50%) for specific bandwidth from routers which are enabled to inject multicast - consumers of multicast pay normal rates for their data (This may range from FOC local national international). In New Zealand we need to get to first base... as a media service provider I need to be able to not be gouged by being required to unicast... I want to deliver a single stream of data to a single or limited number of router(s)... I don't want to alienate or disincentivise Telecom... They need to want to turn this ON... Alternatively, something similar to the Gaming Network could be set up... Best regards Michael

I think the only way you'll get it going is by demanding that multicast traffic is a human right for rural dwellers. Do that, and bags of money will be dispatched in your general direction (I'll take my usual 20% cut of course). -- Juha Take off every sig! - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
