Dean Title: Regional Support Specialist Location: Melbourne, Australia Job Category: Technical Support Job Type: Full Time Ascend Communications is a leading provider of technology and equipment solutions for telecommunications carriers, Internet service providers, and corporate customers worldwide Our expansion in the APAC region means there is now an opportunity for you to join Ascend's Asia Pacific Support Centre as a Regional Support Specialist located in Melbourne, Australia. In your role as a Regional Support Specialist you will contribute to the company's success through support of Ascend products to reflect the unique requirements of this region's markets and customers. To meet the challenges this opportunity presents, you will need at least 5 years direct experience of customer support in the communications industry. You will require knowledge of: Unix Operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, BSD or HP-UX and their use in terms of scripting to automate the process of collecting data for analysis. TCP/IP, PPP and other Internet Protocols, IPX, AppleTalk, Routing Protocols such as RIP, OSPF, BGP and proven LAN/WAN internetworking skills. Switched digital services including ISDN, E1, R2, xDSL, Frame Relay and ATM. X.25/X.75/V.110 is also desirable. Optionally, skills in VOIP and SS7 and will also be to your advantage. You will also need the following skills: Good communication and inter-personal skills. Oral and written fluency in English is mandatory. Additionally, a second language in an Asian dialect will be a distinct advantage. Dynamic and energetic with an ability to take leadership and succeed in identification and resolution of technical issues under pressure. ALERT: National Internet Summit April 30

Greetings - This notice is to alert you to a National Summit on changes to the way the Internet is governed. These changes will affect the way the Internet is allowed to run in New Zealand as well as the rest of the world. New Zealand has not had a chance to consult on these issues and they will impact our economy, the way we do business on the Internet, and the future development of Ecommerce and the Knowledge Economy. Your attendance at the Summit is therefore vital to ensure that we have a say in the future of the Internet in our country. BACKGROUND As you may have become aware, there are significant changes in process in the way the Internet is managed around the world. The formation of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a key to the process. Although the Interim ICANN Board is still at the stage of setting up representative membership structures, it moved at the March 4 1999 meeting in Singapore into implementing Policy before the structures for making that Policy are in place. This means that the future of the Internet is being determined by a small group of interim appointees, not by the widely based representative membership structures as mandated. The ICANN Board next meets in Berlin on May 25 and looks set to adopt reccommedations on a variety of issues including compulsory Trade Mark arbitration processes and Registrar Accreditation guidelines. New Zealand needs to have at least begun the process of establishing a national position before that date. The proposed policies impact upon our national sovereignty, legal system, business certainty, privacy issues, and economy.
