Email to SMS gateway

Hi all. I read this on one of our internal mailing lists, thought it might be of interest / use. We use something like this for server monitoring but it's not so good if your email server / network is down, aside from the potential lagginess [SP?] that sometimes occurs with the SMS service. Still, it may have some value to you. Of course if any information below is wrong, please let me know. Cheers... Clark ================================================================================= [forwarded & edited] If you are on Vodafone, you can 'register' you phone by texting the letter R to the number 901. You should then get back a 'you are registered etc' welcome message. Once your phone is registered anyone/thing can send you a txt by using an email address such as: 6421123456(a)sms.vodafone.net.nz Where your mobile number is presumed to be 021-123456. As far as I know, there is no charge for this service.

We use a combination of SMS messages sent via a Wavecom GSM Modem for server and network link and services monitoring, and our main alarm system connects via xml to a "datashed" gateway which gives us handset availability notification, automatic escalation and fallback to a Telecom CDMA modem for backup. In addition we send a test message once an hour to a remote site, if the message isn't heard, it triggers a timer that eventually triggers a voice dialer. Telecom paging was our previous provider, however as they keep continuing to threaten to phase this out, we moved over to SMS some time ago. I looked at this a while ago, and used an external mail-to-SMS provider (Bulletin Wireless) which worked fine. Obviously having an out-of-band path to them is also handy. As someone else mentioned, Telecom's analog paging service is also reliable and easy to automate. Vodafone Peering

Does Vodafone peer with anybody in NZ? I've been playing with an HSPDA card, and every traceroute (even to IHUG!) always go directly to the US. I would thought they would at least peer with the other two major Telco's in NZ.

Note to the person suggesting using a cellphone. SMS modems use a pretty standardised AT command set and you talk to them just like you would to a modem. Cellphones AFAIK usually have proprietory interfaces.

We exclusively use SMS modems here. The Wavecom is the best you can buy and only slightly dearer then the cheaper models. http://www.itx.co.nz/index.php?cPath=29 is a company I've dealt with before and they are allright.

Actually, SMS does offer "guaranteed" delivery. It doesn't matter if the phone is off, an error occurs in communication, a data circuit goes down ... However there are limits. If the message cannot be delivered (such as end device failure) then you can request a receipt to get notification of this. Affordable Voltage Monitoring over Ethernet?

Gidday, Just wondering if any network operators etc here are using or have seen any kind of device that can measure voltage/current out there somewhere on a network and we can interrogate it remotely and may even send alerts etc if drops below threshold etc? Would have to be resonably affordable, and in simple kit form or off the shelf. If nothing available that anyone can think of I may develop something along these lines, cheap, simple, ethernet, and probably 12V Open for discussion if anyone remotely interested. Regards Dan
