NZRS asks for help testing a DNS feature

Greetings NZNOG Community: Within the context of the IDN Project, that adds five new characters (the macronised vowels) to the set of characters valid for .nz domain name registration, a new SLD will be created: māori.nz All existing and future names registered under .maori.nz will be duplicated in the DNS to be available under .māori.nz as well. We will use a DNS record called a DNAME to implement this functionality. Although the DNAME record has been standard for more than 10 years, we want to make sure domains under māori.nz will work properly. To do so, we have prepared a test page that will let us find out the level of DNAME support among cache resolvers. Please visit http://www.te-reo.maori.dns.net.nz to help us with the testing process. We will collect visits to the page and DNS queries for particular names and correlate them to identify the number of resolvers supporting the DNAME record. Feel free to share this link with anybody, including other suitable mailing lists. If you find any issue, have comments or suggestions, please let us know. Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. NZRR Route Registry Update

Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. Feed of NZ networks

Hi All For a variety of reasons we provide differentiated access to certain services for IP addresses that originate in NZ. Like most I suspect, we use a geo-location tool on the host that receives the connection, but in some cases differentiating at the edge router would be preferable. Is there anyone out there with a list of NZ networks that is regularly updated and provided as a BGP feed (like the Team Cymru BOGON feed)? CDNs in NZ

People are talking about Akamai but there are plenty of other CDN providers ( www.cdnlist.com ) out there that don't have a presence in New Zealand. Many have the nearest pop in Singapore, Hong Kong or perhaps Sydney but in most cases performance to them will be bad due (often worse than to California) due to limited International bandwidth with NZ ISPs Perhaps some of the NZ ISPs could, instead of spending $$$ on building proxy-caches perhaps get together and encourage/subsidises some of these providers into getting a pop in New Zealand on a well-peered network. For example (thanks to Mauricio Freitas for pointer) google will put boxes into some places: http://blogs.broughturner.com/2009/04/googles-peering-and-caching-strategy.… and I would hope that others would do the same if approached. I be especially keen to see an Amazon cloudfront, SimpleCDN and perhaps a few others but speaking as somebody who as lots of bytes to deliver to New Zealanders I'd just about settle for anybody ( that didn't charge $akamai$ pricing). I'd hope it would be too hard for the CDN people and some NZ ISPs to work together to identify which providers are sending worthwhile amounts of traffic and devise some arrangement. Akamai cache selection

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is a method I can use to influence which Akamai cabinet serves up content to our networks? I have had a bit of a hunt on the Akamai site and I seem to be getting lost in sales pitches for hosting for my content. Currently there are at least five Akamai caches that are only one AS hop away from us but we consistently get directed to the most expensive one with the worst latency for us and our user base. I'd hope that there was something less ugly than putting in forwarders for "akamai.net" to dns servers that give an answer that I like.
