Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. DEPLOYMENT STATUS The incremental deployment of DNSSEC in the Root Zone is being carried out first by serving a Deliberately Unvalidatable Root Zone (DURZ), and subsequently by a conventionally signed root zone. Discussion of the approach can be found in the document "DNSSEC Deployment for the Root Zone", as well as in the technical presentations delivered at RIPE, NANOG, IETF and ICANN meetings. Twelve of the thirteen root servers have already made the transition to the DURZ. No harmful effects have been identified. The final root server to make the transition, J-Root, will start serving the DURZ in a maintenance window scheduled for 1700--1900 UTC on 2010-05-05. Initial observations relating to this transition will be presented and discussed at the DNS Working Group meeting at the RIPE meeting in Prague on 2010-05-06. Small linux boxes

Hi all, I imagine there are more than a few people on this list who have equipment in hard-to-reach places, and will have some sort of box at these sites that they can securely access remotely and then access their equipment through that box. I could do this with a cisco router and a modem, but, for a bit more flexibility, I'm looking at using some sort of physically small linux box that would boot off flash, have no moving parts, and provide at least 10/100 ethernet and a couple of serial ports. If anyone has any information on equipment as above that they're using, or have played with, please contact me off-list. Thanks.

Hi, I've come across this myself recently: I think that you might also find that the issue is that the cisco doesn't have a chap password configured, yet during negotiation it originally states that it can do chap. After which everything falls apart (quite strange behaviour actually - if the chap password is not configured it shouldn't state it can do chap for that connection). Regards, Anton

On the Soekris front, my experience: - virtually bomb-proof. I manage to break a 5501 once by plugging in a 48V power supply rather than 12V. It failed a couple of days later. - bad for I/O. As routers with OpenBSD, the 5501 tops out at around 25Mbps of throughput, the 4801s at around 20, the 4501s at 10. I tracked this to issues with PCI handling - the CPUs do PCI emulation, there is no hardware control - Ethernet ports - the chipsets vary between the different units, as I recall, the 4501s didn't do MDI/MDI-X; the 5501 on FreeBSD had a driver problem that locked up TX - currently have a 5501 as our PABX with a USB drive and astlinux - works great. USB support is there for larger disk drives and a mini-PCI slot - O/S support is very stable (other than driver issues noted above) in Linux, OpenBSD and FreeBSD - Soekris VPN card is a good hardware accelerator for a VPN concentrator - I have a couple of these as well unused at present The 6501s and 7501s are vapour as far as I can tell. I have half a dozen boxes sitting here - mix of 4501s and 4801s and some more due to be phased out of service shortly. If anyone wants these, I can swap for decent beer. Regards, Stu
