The Power co had a cable fault they eventually found. Initially another substation fault was feared as a transformer tripped at the same time and at the same place as the ring opened - which happened to NOT be the faulty cable segment. After a few recloses (think "no shutdown" with lotsa power behind you) the fault became apparent. (ie someone felt the ground shake) and it was isolated. Most customers closed things down due to false restarts with the recloses. We waited and installed a geny as the UPS was horribly confused and pretty well dead. The outage affected New World, Actrix (where CityLink have a switch) and most of Courtenay Place. There were genies and extension cords everywhere.........even down the footpath. The New World Sub needs some new paint on the switchgear. Cable seeking backhoes

Does anyone have a suitable rule of thumb to predict the incidence of cable seeking backhoes/trawlers per km? I've tracked down one reference of 'one hit per 7 months per 1000km', without any qualification as to location. One would for instance imagine that armor-plated cable sitting on the bottom of the ocean would have a different failure rate to that of RG9 strung across the local street. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. This posting, or one like it, is sent to all subscribers each month. About This Mailing List This list has around 340 subscribers, a number currently more or less static. You may only post to the list from an address subscribed to one of the lists described below. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations, nor the administrator, is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3.
