Cable seeking backhoes

Does anyone have a suitable rule of thumb to predict the incidence of cable seeking backhoes/trawlers per km? I've tracked down one reference of 'one hit per 7 months per 1000km', without any qualification as to location. One would for instance imagine that armor-plated cable sitting on the bottom of the ocean would have a different failure rate to that of RG9 strung across the local street. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. This posting, or one like it, is sent to all subscribers each month. Operators' Contact List See http://www.usenet.net.nz/noc/ for operational contact details for most New Zealand ISP's. These are intended for use by other network operators rather than by most customers. Auckland Peering Exchange See http://www.ape.net.nz/ for details of the Auckland Peering Exchange and those connected there. About This Mailing List This list has around 340 subscribers, a number currently more or less static. You may only post to the list from an address subscribed to one of the lists described below. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations, nor the administrator, is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7. ipv6 peering

Morning all, Thanks to Dean's great ipv6 presentation at Uniforum, everyone's got a ::/28 allocation from APNIC now, right? I'm interested in hearing from people who've got v6 allocations, either from tunnel brokers, or otherwise who'd like to peer at an NZ ipv6 peering point. APE and WIX are possibilities, however I have my doubts on the number of providers on WIX and APE who would be willing to add v6 addresses on their interfaces from citylink to any servers in their network; it'd be easier to put a 6to4 tunnel for testing purposes on a router in the middle of the network, especially if the router question already has a tunnel to a tunnelbroker overseas. One of the benefits of this is that any NZ<->NZ v6 traffic doesn't have to traverse international tunnels. The big driver of this will be the amount of local content available via v6. Admittedly there's not much around at the moment, however I do have mysql, apache, xfree86, cygwin, cpan and sunfreeware mirrors that are on the 6bone which could serve as good starters. I'm sure that there would be some webservers out there who are v6 aware which people would be willing to route ipv6 to. The more people we can get on the ix, the more content would become available. Sorta like the multicast chicken and egg thing. Could I get a showing of interest on who'd like to be on such an ix (just a box I have running zebra which a whole bunch of 6in4 tunnels), even if you've got a ::/64 tunnel allocation from a tunnel broker? There won't be any international v6 transit provided, just a BGP4+ feed of all the NZ prefixes of people peering.
