The SDN Workshop - 18 & 19 February 2015 in Wellington
by Dean Pemberton 08 Feb '15

08 Feb '15

Given that the SDN tutorial at NZNOG was packed, I thought this might be of interest to people. There are a few seats left and on Friday it's being opened up to students. If you're interested then get in touch via the email below. ---------- http://ecs.victoria.ac.nz/Events/SDNWorkshop Future generation networking systems will require a paradigm shift in how they are networked, organised, configured, optimized, and recovered automatically based on their operating situation. With the emergence of Software Defined Networks (SDN), context awareness and dynamic adaptive services and application are gaining much attention since they allow automatic configuration of devices and their parameters, systems, services, and applications to user's context change. In addition, context awareness, with the help of software defined and cognitive systems, allows customisation of operating parameters of devices, users, applications, and networks based on the current context. This first workshop intends to introduce software defined networking concepts and practice for people new to the field. The workshop will also be a forum for practitioners from industry, academia and government to exchange ideas, present new results and provide future vision on these topics. The morning sessions will consist of talks, while the afternoon sessions will be more hands-on. To make the most of the afternoon sessions, you should have some basic programming experience (we will be using Python) and you need to bring a laptop. ________________________________ Date: 18th and 19th February 2015 Venue : Room 413, Railway building, Pipitea Campus, 1 Bunny Street, Wellington. Time: 9a.m - 5p.m (both days). Registration cost: NZD 50.00 per participant. Refreshments will be provided.

Fwd: [Cerowrt-devel] OpenWrt conference survey
by Dave Taht 05 Feb '15

05 Feb '15

The prpl foundation is attempting to become an umbrella arm of the openwrt folk and reaching out for feedback. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Eric Schultz <eschultz(a)prplfoundation.org> Date: Fri, Feb 6, 2015 at 8:41 AM Subject: [Cerowrt-devel] OpenWrt conference survey To: "cerowrt-devel(a)lists.bufferbloat.net" <cerowrt-devel(a)lists.bufferbloat.net> tl;dr: prpl is gauging interest in an OpenWrt conference via a short survey at http://bit.ly/1BWKWFP -- All, My name's Eric Schultz and I'm the Community Manager at prpl Foundation. I've created a survey to gauge the community's interest in prpl Foundation organizing an OpenWrt conference. Since CeroWrt is based on OpenWrt, I think folks in the CeroWrt community might also be interested in an OpenWrt conference. As background, prpl participates in the OpenWrt community through our members directly as well as our working group, prplwrt. Organizing an OpenWrt conference is one more way in which we can support and strengthen the OpenWrt community. We'd like to know if there's support in the community for a conference dedicated to OpenWrt. Topics at a conference could include: * How to develop your own flavor of OpenWrt (like CeroWrt) * Securing OpenWrt * Question and answer with the core OpenWrt team We're excited at the prospect of organizing a conference for the community. If you have any interest in an OpenWrt conference, please complete the survey at your earliest convenience. The survey is at http://bit.ly/1BWKWFP Thanks for your time and your commitment to CeroWrt. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Recordings of 2015, and license
by Nick 02 Feb '15

02 Feb '15

I almost hesitate to bring it up again, last time there appeared to be no consensus about it, but... Do we know what, if any, license the recordings of this years NZNOG are? In theory, it should have been stipulated in the contract with the recording/streaming company, along with the speakers agreements. Cheers, Nick -- Nick 'Zaf' Clifford

Re: [nznog] Suggestions for router with 3G external antenna for remote site comms
by Laurence Bullivant 01 Feb '15

Afternoon, If you want something rock stable then i recommend the Cisco 88Xg series. They are fixed interface devices with either xDSL/HSNS/Ethernet WAN ports and inbuilt dual SIM 3G. They have dual antennas with N-Type connecters for low loss external antennas if needed. We have deployed these in the past for 3G failover on xDSL connections and they have always been extremely reliable. -Laurence Bullivant laurence(a)bullivant.co.nz On Sat, Jan 31, 2015 at 3:34 PM, Darren Moss <Darren.Moss(a)webhostnz.co.nz> wrote: > Hi All, > > We have a bunch of regional sites (weather probes) that run some > equipment, 2 PCs and are connected to the internet. > > At the moment it's dongle city which I would like to change over to > something a little better :) > > I am looking for suggestions on a decent (business grade) router with 3G > capability an external antenna connection. > > At each site, the equipment sits in a rack, inside a hut and signal > strength is reasonable (3/5). > > My thinking is to deploy a basic Cisco router with a 3G WIC then an > external antenna on the same mast where we collect weather data. > > Happy to hear suggestions and input. > > Many thanks > > > > Darren. > > _______________________________________________ > NZNOG mailing list > NZNOG(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/nznog > >

Thanks NZNOG
by Terry Manderson 31 Jan '15

31 Jan '15

Hi NZNOGers, I'd just like to say thanks. Thanks for the hospitality extended to an Aussie. Thanks for a really nice 2 days of thought provoking and interesting speakers. Thanks to the current trustees for making it happen, and thanks to the sponsors for all the schwaag and subsiding the event (as they always do!). Mostly I'd like to give thanks to the exiting trustees Neil and Dean. Like previous trustees Joe and Andy they have given much of themselves, of their time, and their expertise to make the Internet a better place through NOG coordination. I know this first hand in my role with AusNOG. It's a tireless beast. Often without thanks. It chews up personal lives and makes employers look at you with raised eyebrows. People often comment "why bother", and question your sanity. But ultimately what you have done makes the Internet better, and each person who takes it on and makes such efforts to this amazing concoction of technology contributes to an entire world of "better". And it's with that sincere goal which you have both plainly embodied, that I offer you MY thanks and my appreciation for all you have done. You deserve more than just this email, more than the beer I will buy you when next we meet ... you deserve the recognition for those selfless efforts. Well done. Cheers Terry

Suggestions for router with 3G external antenna for remote site comms
by Darren Moss 31 Jan '15

31 Jan '15

Hi All, We have a bunch of regional sites (weather probes) that run some equipment, 2 PCs and are connected to the internet. At the moment it's dongle city which I would like to change over to something a little better :) I am looking for suggestions on a decent (business grade) router with 3G capability an external antenna connection. At each site, the equipment sits in a rack, inside a hut and signal strength is reasonable (3/5). My thinking is to deploy a basic Cisco router with a 3G WIC then an external antenna on the same mast where we collect weather data. Happy to hear suggestions and input. Many thanks Darren.
