The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At last count the list had just over 150 subscribers, with the count growing by around five each month. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7. Postings of a political, philosophical or legal nature are discouraged. 8. Postings to the list should be in ASCII or MIME encoded as text/plain. Attachments should not be sent to the list. To present a document, a suitable URL may be referred to. For documents of general interest, the use of proprietary file formats is discouraged. 9. Breaches of list etiquette should be dealt with privately with the offending list user, and should not result in complaints being sent to the list. Digest Mailing List If you don't wish to receive postings as they are sent, you can instead subscribe to the nznog-digest mailiing list, on which all postings are sent out in a single "digest" every couple of days. Other Activities NZNOG does not at present have other regular activities than this mailing list, though some Auckland subscribers have been known to meet over beer. Some subscribers are likely to attend the Uniforum NZ 2000 conference in Hamilton in the first week of October. Looking for recommendations

Seeking some opinions here, and hoping to draw on the collected wisdom of NZNOG ;). We are looking at finding a different registry for GTLDs. Currently we are using Network Solutions (their motto: "Send us a detailed e-mail explaining the issue and how our FAQ doesn't cover it, and we'll refer you to the FAQ!"), but are looking for somewhere where the service is a little bit better (ie exists). Leading options so far seems to be OpenSRS or INA, but we are open to suggestions. At the moment we are not processing a huge volume of these, but we are expecting this to increase. Ideally we want a fair price, fairly prompt service, good support, and the ability to run an account (or some form of pre-purchase) Please let us know who you've found do a good job and feel you can recommend. Possible Telecom outage

G'day all, You may like to know that Telecom have advised that they have 3 x 140Meg bearers down on the South Island westcoast affecting many thousands of their customers in Nelson, Greymouth etc. We were advised that this outage started at about 10:42 today. We have not been given an ETR by Telecom. Telstra Saturn to pull out of NZIX

Telstra Saturn have been considering the future of their presence at NZIX for some time, and the decision has now been made to stop peering with other networks over that exchange. Telstra Saturn has broadband access to other large provider networks over the APE and WIX, and these newer exchanges are currently where the vast majority of peering traffic between Telstra Saturn and other networks is being carried. Private inter-provider circuits also carry peering traffic in Auckland and Wellington. The simplification of traffic management accommodated by this change should improve performance from Telstra Saturn to other networks. However, we are happy to manage the transition in conjunction with other operators to ensure that the change is made smoothly -- please contact me directly if your organisation has any specific requirements in this regard. Okay, weird question of the day, slightly off topic. Is anyone else getting corrupt faxes for "Telecom Network Planned Outage Advice" fax outs (ie when they are operating on circuits). Contact details.

A while (actually 12 months) ago there was a discussion about having a list of contact details of ISP/other Nocs for emergency or other (ie setting up peering) reasons. Are people still interested in setting this up?
