Hi all, This would seem to be a sensible forum to get some discussion running on peering within NZ, either across the NZIX switch, across WIX or via bilateral peer-to-peer circuits. It might also be a good place to gauge enthusiasm for a "BGP only" policy at NZIX, with or without a local route server. Might I suggest that we pursue some low-key publicity of this list to get network administrators from Netlink, IHUG, Iconz, Pronet, Actrix, Voyager, Xtra(?), etc, etc involved and speaking about these issues? >From the rumblings I have been hearing critical mass for the eradication of OSPF on the NZIX switch should be a fairly straightforward first objective, and recent domestic peering "upsets" would have been easier to track down with a list full of network people. Hi Donald, sorry, busy as ever. Yes I am getting these. As for some things I would like to see happen: First of all, I think it's important we know who's subscribed to this list, for the sake of fairness, so can we be kept abrest of changes. I think it's impportant that we communicate with all of the main providers of Internet in New Zealand, and am keen particularly to see IBM, Compuserve, and IHUG invited. No point in being secretive. What should we accomplish, IMHO: IP addressing consensus. We have to have a firm and agreed policy as to what happens with portability of address space. Domestic peering strategy, eg. progressing the AMX. Communication lines, particularly contact agreements for movement of customers from supplier to supplier or faults due to incorrect advertisements. Should Telecom be able to call Telstra staff in the middle of the weekend to get them to stop advertising a customer ? If so how ? If not what do we tell our customers ? What should we not do, IMHO: We are not a regulatory body of any kind, this should be a communication forum only allowing us to discuss and action topics as above. Contractual or formal Agreements should be made outside of this group. OK, in reponse to Roger Hicks' posting below I've added the people named in the headers of his message to a mailing list I've called nznog. The address to send mail to is nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz. There's a fair amount else the Majordomo and related software on that box can do, but there doesn't seem a lot of point to explaining that just yet. Could people receiving this please reply to me verifying that thye have seen it?
