ATM (STM1/OC3) is 155M Access and then you buy PVC's (Virtual Circuits) over it. The hardware is not cheap to terminate it, but telecom offer other services to terminate pipes over 2M Also depending on what you are going to use the ATM for (its its only for a point-to-point connetion only maybe other carriers (United Networks/Tangent/Wired Counties etc )could do a much faster/cost effective connection) Thanks Craig Whitmore ----- Original Message ----- From: robbie_gernandt(a)wilsonandhorton.co.nz To: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Sent: Friday, August 22, 2003 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [nznog] ATM Recommendation ok, sorry let me re-phrase that, what link speed or bandwidth does your solution support? We implemented an ATM (34M) connection to Telecom and worked closely with all the local (NZ) vendors and it was not a cheap solution robbie My solution suits local conditions.
just curious, does your Cisco ATM solution support E1 or E3?

Not at all. I can offer a Cisco solution that would likely leave change out of $5K or $6K.

Hi All,
I have a client that has asked me to recommend a router
to connect
their Ethernet network to Telecoms ATM system. I don't know all that much about ATM, and I told them that but I thought I would ask you
guys.
What would you recommend as a low-cost entry ATM device?
Better yet
has anyone got something suitable that they want to sell on for cheep?
Thanks
Oooooh, your clients are in for a bit of a shock. ATM and low cost do not go in the same sentence together. ISPs who have bought Cisco equipment capable of ATM have spent 10s of thousands for the correct ATM card and the modular chassis to go with it.
On the other hand, if you are prepared to be a bit experimental you may be able to use a PC installed with Linux and a supported PCI ATM card. I've never seen anyone try it though.
