Hands up for Level 48 (or ST as a whole) being the stupidest place for
co-lo in the world?
APE's available at a whole lot of places around Auckland now, as an
industry should we be looking at a move away from the SkyTower? Not
all at once, but I'd be interested to know:
Who still thinks it's a critical place and would deploy new equipment
there today?
Anyone have it as their only point of possible APE interconnect in Auckland?
Is anyone not aware that there are loads of other places to get on
APE/do peering/hand off in Auckland?
I'd like to be having a conversation in the not to distant future
which went along the lines of:
"Heh, remember those crazy days when we used to have a peering
exchange in the sky tower?"
"Heh - yeah what were we thinking"

Dean

First time I saw it and went up there I was thinking 'What the hell?!' It
would be like putting a DC at the top of Centrepoint Tower in Sydney...
completely insane and crazy.

It's not so much that APE is there. Honestly APE has less value compared to the other cross connects I have at SKY in terms of a reason for co-locating there. It's more that every other carrier / ISP / random guy with an AS has a presence there, so is a handy spot to interconnect. If there was a decent DC in the CBD, where everyone else was, and that wasn't excruciatingly expensive, then I'm sure we'd all be there instead. Also Citylink seem to have a default pricing policy that's, "well try and make it really expensive to connect to APE everywhere else but sky", which seems to have sane pricing for historical reasons. -- Liam Farr +64-22-6107884 +64-27-5222624 Sent from my iPhone

We have equipment in both SkyT and Kingston St. For us Kingston St has been
less reliable than the SkyT lately.
What reliable locations are there on APE in Auckland? And from what Liam
said before, do any of these locations have a lot of us in them already?

Hi List I recently had to look over all the datacentres available in Auckland and their connectivity to APE. There are only three locations in Auckland (SkyTower, 220 Queen, Telco House) at which Citylink will sell you a port to APE for a very reasonable price. Other locations such as at Vocus are much more expensive, presumably as their costs are higher in those locations. SkyTower is complicated, Telco House is pretty much full, which leaves 220 Queen as the place to be. Someone from Citylink may like to confirm what I have said. Sounds like a good suggestion. Citylink? Care to comment?
And yes, everyone is there today... but if you want things to change then
you do need to start a process.
Whats a better place in Auckland which we could start to work towards?

If there is going to be a realistic alternative site it needs to cater to the smaller “community cabinet” customers and have a connect via whatever method suits you attitude. Mayoral drive is the polar opposite of this.

I would think 220 Queen Street would be the logical one for that reason? The bar is set pretty high for entry into Mayoral Drive…

Yeah, 220 Queen Street do have a number of providers (*waves*), and they do not run their own community rack, they’ve previously indicated that they’re not against someone doing that on their behalf.
As for Mayoral Drive, I believe that they are fast running out of footprints.

I can confirm this. We were asked nicely to start using one that was allocated to us or lose it around the beginning of this year due to them running out of space. Cheers, -- Lincoln Reid Head of Networks ACSData - AS18119 lincoln(a)acsdata.co.nz Phone: +64 4 939 2200 Fax: +64 4 939 2201
220 queen also has the advantage of cross connects being (from memory) a $50 one off with no monthly charge! It is also the sort of place that is suited to servers being located there rather than just being a Brolocation site suited at best only for a couple of routers. Hi Guys,
Citylink have been in the process of refreshing it's core infrastructure
over the last few months. The big nodes for us in Auckland are Kingston and
220 Queen for many of the reasons that folks have already outlined. That's
not to say Sky Tower is not important to us - it's just got different
(ahem) qualities. So from Citylink's perspective 220 Queen is good. The
sales guys tell me there's a bit of space at Kingston too.
Having said that we're always focussed on making the APE a distributed
exchange point so in reality it shouldn't really matter where you are
(inside the footprint of course). I guess you'd just need to weigh up
whether being able to shop around for colocation and all of it's associated
costs and the benefits that brings vs the cost of APE connectivity. Simply
put we think the cost of making the wrong choice for colocation will
outweigh any APE stuff.
Others have mentioned Mayoral Drive too. Falling out of the NZNOG
conference this year was a message to get APE in there. We're working on
that. Because we try to keep the cost of delivery low, we're having to be a
little creative - essentially allowing us to set up crossconnects from an
APE switch inside the site when we've been hosted by a 3rd party. Last time
I spoke to someone at Chorus about this they said it wouldn't be until
October until they could get into that.
Others have also mentioned a cost difference that is largely there for
historical reasons. Citylink are actually looking at normalising the
pricing across the APE to make it fairer for everyone. That's inline with
our aim to have a distributed IXP so that it really doesn't matter where
you are.
It'd be neat to see a list of locations around Auckland and who is where.
That'll help us to make sure the APE is where you need it to be.
Cheers

I would think 220 Queen Street would be the logical one for that reason? The bar is set pretty high for entry into Mayoral Drive…

Jamie,
Normalising pricing would help immensely. The last pricing we received meant we’d pay 5 times the rate for Sky and 220 to pick it up in Vocus’ DC in Albany, even though there’s gear in Vocus.
Sky Tower power is a known variable. 220 has a few variables, power and otherwise, from what we’ve seen, and also heard from various operators in there. Getting into Mayoral Drive is difficult, and not just due to price. Whilst power issues in Sky Tower can be mitigated (which isn't so useful when others don’t) as mentioned, a quality facility central to Auckland for this purpose would be welcome.

I can offer some comment about that. Prior to NZNOG conference this year I
would have described it as Cambrian, or perhaps Jurassic. Or somesuch.
But after the NOG conference this year, and with the clear majority support
of members of a group which included
Snap, FX, Callplus, Kordia, WXC, Voyager, Actrix, DTS, Orcon, RuralLink,
Inspire, Unleash, Vodafone, Vocus we put forward an approach which sought
to improve this policy. I forget now but basically 9 stepped forward in
support and 5 didn't get around to it.
It was listened to by Chorus. And promises were made. So now we wait to see
if we can emerge into a more modern age. I've no reason to think otherwise.
I'd like to think that something as agricultural as Cross Connect Policy
should be quite considerate of the broader demands of the Internet
Community to keep traffic fast and local where it makes sense. Reckon we'll
need that in this brave new UFB age.

It's far too costly to move out of there, every man and his dog is there,
every carrier I have come across is there and APE are REAL pricey anywhere

We're re-assessing our Sky Tower footprint at the moment. No doubt it is great for radio, not so much for co-location. Actrix has been up there for some time and I suspect that back in the 90s there weren't many options for points of presence so everyone just landed there. In Citylink's defense, there are currently three places to interconnect where it isn't it really expensive - 220 Queen Street, their DC and Sky tower but I do I wish there were more. Hands up for Level 48 (or ST as a whole) being the stupidest place for co-lo in the world?
To be fair, when we first wrangled a switch onto that floor there was no other colo facility that was on-net for everybody doing metro fibre, and no real plausible alternative that wasn't either a Telecom facility, a CLEAR facility or a TelstraNZ facility. Metro fibre in those days being expensive, there was also enthusiasm from some about the ability to do a radio shot back to the network. (I appreciate things have moved on, and change is good, but I felt an urge to explain myself :-) Joe
