speedtest.net - Texas to Wellington vs. Texas to Christchurch
I was having some issues transferring to/from one of my Rackspace VPSs, so I run a few tests on speedtest.net from the VPS to various parts of NZ. I expect SOME difference, but these are outrageous. Basically: What the hell is going on in Christchurch? There's very little information about your tests here. What exact hosts are you trying to test to? I suspect you'll find that these numbers are correct, because Citylink have some anycast servers in the US. 41ms is certainly not the RTT from Texas to Wellington, it's more like 150ms, at a guess. I would really recommend www.geekzone.co.nz for this sort of general discussion. You might also consider joining Internet New Zealand and raising these sorts of issues there. If you're posting to this list then some detailed technical information really is required, such as trace routes from source and destinations so we can get some idea of where the issues might be. I suggest, as an operational list, we are very much interested in seeing the fastest Internet space from New Zealand that we can, but you do need to meet us half way with a detailed explanation of the technical issues so we can make some sort of informed comment. www.speedtest.net is not a good test tool for many reasons that can be found on Google if you're interested in performance testing. I think the better question is what the hell is going on in Wellington!?!? Wellington to Texas is about 12,000 km, or about 24,000 km round trip. Light moves at about 3x10^8 metres/second through a vacuum cleaner (or is that just a vacuum?), or about 2/3rd's that speed through a piece of fiber optic cable. 24000 x 1000 / (3x10^8 x 2/3) = 0.12 So it takes about 120 milliseconds to get from Texas to Wellington and back - presuming a perfectly straight path. If you're seeing 41ms, then there's really only three possibilities : * Someone moved Wellington closer to the US * Someone moved Texas closer to NZ * Your testing is flawed.
