New Trans-Tasman submarine cable
Oh, looky, a new cable: http://www.telecom-media.co.nz/releases_detail.asp?id=3880&page=index I'm curious about something though, maybe someone on the list can share a bit of history. Is Tasman-2 still active in some capacity? I had always assumed it was shutdown after southern cross was built, but it's still shown often on cable maps such as the one in that press release: http://twitpic.com/c4wu2k Cheers Kris
More Cables = Good. This is a pretty good site. Still shows Tasman-2. http://submarinecablemap.com/ Christian -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Kris Price Sent: Monday, February 18, 2013 4:29 PM To: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: [nznog] New Trans-Tasman submarine cable Oh, looky, a new cable: http://www.telecom-media.co.nz/releases_detail.asp?id=3880&page=index I'm curious about something though, maybe someone on the list can share a bit of history. Yes - more cables does equal good...
However, given the three Telco's involved... does it still mean high
prices?

Tas-2 is still in operation, but it's essentially got a "do not revive" on it. That is, if it gets trawled up, the kraken strikes, or it just stops working for whatever reason, no-one is going to despatch a ship to go and fix it. While it exists, it's worthwhile using it but that's all. -- Michael Newbery IP Architect Vodafone Fixed NZ TelstraClear. Simple Solutions. For the curious, can you give any details on its current capacity, has it been through some upgrades over the years? If dean starts pulling on it will no one really notice? Cheers :) Kris

I don't know much detail. I gather (Wikipedia) it had an operational life of 25 years (built in 1992) but was out of capacity within two years so the 'upgrades' consisted of new cable systems. It's a 560Mbps (PDH, not SDH/SONET) system.
If dean starts pulling on it will no one really notice?
Not unless Dean is a lot stronger than I remember him. ("Dean crush puny cable!") -- Michael Newbery IP Architect Vodafone Fixed NZ TelstraClear. Simple Solutions.
