Hello NZNOG, I was reading this: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11495508 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11495508 just now, which says the Windows 10 upgrade is overwhelming capacity on the UFB (which bit of it?). It’s a single source however, and I was wondering if there are other data points for the traffic increase to look at? Not sure if this is operational as such, so please email me off-list if so. Thanks — Juha
It's doing the rounds on other "news" sites aka it's a PR puff piece designed to spread FUD for Digital Island's own interests. See http://itbrief.co.nz/story/windows-10-upgrade-causing-ufb-congestion/
How does the same article get "written" by Regan Schoultz and Shannon Williams?
As far as I can see UFB hasn't broken a sweat, on our own network all we've observed is a bit of an increase in Akamai traffic but to say it's causing congestion is wrong because this is precisely what the UFB network is designed to handle (and it is!).

Based on the real world traffic of over 650k NZ broadband users, and
having specifically monitored the impact of the Win10 release on our
CDNs and international network, I find it totally inconceivable that
the claims of that article are anywhere near the truth.
I would move on – there is NOTHING to see here.

I concur with this, apart from a small ramp up in Akamai traffic there is nothing to see here as far as the win10 release goes. Hell, the download is equivalent to a popular 1080p movie off Netflix as far as the network is concerned. That’s a faux advertisement labelled as news IMHO.
A 1080P movie off Netflix that can be watched during offpeak hours,
paused for hours at a time, restarted, delayed, and scheduled to be
watched by Netflix for when it best suits the network conditions.
Sheesh. I wonder how carefully these press releases are sanity checked
before being published as news.

I'm guessing that's exactly why Juha was asking the question in the first place. Sensible thing for a knowledgeable techie journo like Juha to do. Sadly in the IT arena, there are too few Juha's and way too many dumb reporters who are happy to publish anything to fill their daily centimetre quotas... Cheers Keith

I have the "original" press release. Didn't bother posting as it's basically a promotional piece for the ISP sending it out. The last two paragraphs basically go on a "we offer a fibre service with guaranteed LSA so you don't have to worry about your business being impacted."
NBR noticed the same and called it out.

I run a fixed wireless network and can tell you windows 10 is not causing a problem at all. Our speeds and backhauls are no where near what UFB fibre is capable of, so I find it hard to believe. However it is possible that larger ISPs may not have capacity between cities to feed the local handovers – but that’s not something I can really give much advice on.
