802.11 Wireless plotting per AP
Hey Guys, I know this may be a little off topic, however I know there are many wireless operators on list. I'm wondering what you use to track wireless signal from a base station to see what the footprint is. I.e. I would like to drive around down all the streets where this hotspot is located to plot a map of what signal strength is like in this location for a specific AP, I will circle the streets around the AP until I've lost all signal and hope to have some sort of map to work with :) Any help offlist would be appreciated. Thanks Barry Murphy
Perhaps one could strike a deal with Google to map this out for you when they update street-view? :) -Sean -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Barry Murphy Sent: Friday, 3 July 2009 12:53 PM To: nznog Subject: [nznog] 802.11 Wireless plotting per AP Hey Guys, I know this may be a little off topic, however I know there are many wireless operators on list. How awesome would that be really?
Most people use software like NetStumbler with a GPS attached.
You can export logs etc and play with some xml files and do what you like.
Andy's comment just popped up then, Wi-Spy with visiwave is an option.

Also Ubiquti's "AirView" products might help you. If you want decent results
get a $700+ spectrum analyser

I think the inverse is probably true, but we'll never know.
Google likely had plans to drive around the streets to map wireless connectivity as a survey, and probably thought 'stuff it, lets take pictures while we're at it'.

The wifi based location thing that integrates in to many google related things (google maps on iphone comes to mind) is: 1) provided by a third party (skyhook) 2) mapped by planes flying overhead Making this slightly operational, we use WiSpy units to provide the pristine wifi coverage that Skeeve enjoys at the NZNOG conference. -- Nathan Ward

I've used a device called Wi-Spy from http://www.metageek.net/ which does a neat job. Looks like they have newer versions of hardware and software since I used it a couple of years ago. I haven't used but have thought about VisiWave which uses the Wi-Spy device as part of its mapping process. http://www.visiwave.com/index.php/ScrInfoProducts.html One of the examples on this page is for the Port of Tauranga so someone there must have used it at some stage.

Earlier this year NetworkWorld reviewed some low-cost wireless spectrum analyzers, including the Wi-Spy device that Andy mentioned. http://www.networkworld.com/reviews/2009/032309-wlan-test.html Cheers Ben Stasiewicz
Not quite what you're after, but if you want to plot theoretical wireless spread, and have a bit of time to spend, there is a free application called Radio Mobile available here - http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html It'll also do path loss calculations, and can pull topo maps from various places. The interface is a bit arcane, but this is an excellent piece of software for plotting potential path losses and so on to customers from APs. Eg, expected signal strength at location xyz distance 10km Will do practically any frequency, so long as you're able to plug in the antenna characteristics and so on. Cheers, Blair
Hi Barry,
I suggest contacting Justin Wells at thepacific.net (justin(a)tpnet.co.nz).
With detailed antenna specs, GPS co-ordinates and elevation information he
creates topographic maps with overlaid propagation information for all tpn's
AP's which are quite accurate. I think he uses a program called RadioMobile
(Don't quote me on that).

RadioMobile Deluxe, I use it too:

One tip, download all the nasa data for the areas you want before you start.
Cheers,

I have had pretty good success with a tool called SPLAT. It's designed for FM/AM type stuff, so the coverage maps are not that high resolution, but it's LOS plots are pretty good. It's a command line tool, so you could use it as part of some scripts, etc. It can output Google Earth shape/path stuff as well, so you can see a LOS in all it's 3D glory without leaving your chair. As with many other tools, it uses NASA STRM data. On 4/07/2009, at 9:42 PM, Bill Walker wrote:

Barry, Covera Zone is also worth noting, for actual mapping as opposed to theoretical. Doesn't require any special measurement hardware - http://www.celtrio.com And something we have created with it: http://www.serverworks.co.nz/pdf/Coverage%20Map%20-%20Gulf%20Harbour%20M arina.pdf Cheers, Russell -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Barry Murphy Sent: Friday, 3 July 2009 3:53 a.m. To: nznog Subject: [nznog] 802.11 Wireless plotting per AP Hey Guys, I know this may be a little off topic, however I know there are many wireless operators on list.
