We recently went through this exercise when we got new subnets off Apnic. Its not much fun. The large commercial websites (ondemand, trademe, tv3, isky) seem to mostly get their geolocation information from the www.maxmind.com database, so first point of call is to check where maxmind currently has your IPs located (ours were recycled from India) Eg. http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_demo_ip?ips=202.3.89.2 You can try and get Maxmind to update their database by sending an email to corrections(a)maxmind.com, but they are terrible at actioning the corrections and only seem to update the database once a month. Good luck! I therefore have a question about IP to Location services: How do I set the location of a particular IP address? I thought it would probably be in the whois section of my-apnic but when looking at the IP address my upstream gives me, there is no mention of the word Napier in any of the whois fields, but there is the street address of their office, without the word Napier, and ip2location thinks the ISP name is their street address. There is no city field- just a country. Yet ip2location knows that it is in Napier. Is there a particular place in the my-apnic portal that I need to look, or do I need to approach various ip to location services and inform them? The reason for this is that I want websites like TVNZ Ondemmand and TV3 ondemand to know that my customers are in New Zealand, before I start assigning them public addresses from my pool. Any help is much appreciated, Thanks, Ray Taylor Taylor Communications 06-929-9082 021-483-280

Not "seem to" - they do only update it once a month (within the first few days of the month), and openly state this on their website. You can then factor in a few days to a few months for anyone using the database to download and install the new version. In general I've found them very good at making changes, especially if you're very clear about the details (eg, the fact they are assigned to you), especially if the whois data agrees with what you're claiming. It's worth noting that they have an up to date service which you pay for, Either via a webservice (with sample code for most popular languages) or download. Maxmind do seem to be the largest source, Google and Google analytics use them as well. Even with the paid download service it's still a once-a-month update. Their webservice used to be the same, although it's possible that it's changed. Updates are done within the first few days of the month, so updates can take anywhere between a day and a month to occur depending on when you submit them.

Google primarily use Quova, along with their own internal data. I think they may use Maxmind for Google Analytics though. Scott.
