Submarine cable exposed by erosion on Murawai Beach
Hi all, while doing a bit of off roading at Murawai Yesterday, I came across this exposed submarine cable. It could be one of the older Pacrim or Tasman cables but I suspect it may be the Southern Cross Western cable. I would hope the appropriate people might be on this list to recognize the cable and initiate remedy action as the cable is in a very public and exposed position. http://tonyw.com/cable-2.htm There are some Telecom cable warning signs further back in line with the cable, and next stop from Murawai in the direction the cable is going is Australia. Cheers, beer on

Tony, I doubt you've found SXC as it doesn't land near there. However - there's an old cable (1890 - 1956) called La Perouse (SYD) - Nelson which is noted as landing in Murawi Beach. The maintenance authority for it is listed as Cable and Wireless - you could call their cable system NOC, but I reckon they'd go "huh?". MMC Tony Wicks wrote:

Ok, I think I was confused - I searched by Murawai but everything lists it as Muriwai. The construction of the cable doesn't look much like SXC - but I've let their NOC know anyway. (I have reasonable capacity on the cable and quite frankly don't want my weekend ruined). MMC Tony Wicks wrote:

No problem. Unfortunately I don't know much about the geography of Auckland, so I rely on CTRL-F! If you want to see what old cables might be nearby: http://www.iscpc.org/ (Cable Data->Australiasia). Note that some places are the cable stations, not the beach landings (which maybe quite some distance away). Having looked at your photos I reckon it IS an old cable. The rope layer around the armour layer is a bit of a giveaway. MMC

So whose responsibility is it to "remove" a 91 Year old Telegraph Cable which hasn't been used in 60 years? If it is this cable then it is part of New Zealand's History and should be put into some place like MOTAT or alike. I can't find any description of what it looks like apart from being 2 inchs in diameter at the shore.. Thanks
There looks to be at least four cables landing within-metres of the GPS
coords given on Tony's site (S 36.48.498 - E 174.24.982).
Map/chart available from: http://charts.linz.govt.nz/tifs/nz42.tif (Highly
advise saving the file before opening it!!)
(For some idea of scale, the no-anchoring-limits are about 8km long where
they meet the shoreline.)
