Hi There :) We are having some major issues over the past week when forwarding mail to xtra. Mainly: - delivery temporarily suspended: connect to mta.xtra.co.nz - connect to mta.xtra.co.nz[210.54.141.1]: server dropped connection without sending the initial SMTP greeting Has anyone seen any of these issues and knows anything about them? I just trying to contact XTRA's administrators, but no response. I have had a good response back from the corporate side of XTRA, which is assuring. Regards and Thanks, Simon

I've been seeing similar issues, such as 2006-12-07 14:13:36 1Gs4Fp-0000gi-Vv SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: host mta.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1]: 421 Service not available 2006-12-07 14:13:36 1Gs4Fq-0000hO-Ut mta.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] Connection refused 2006-12-07 12:03:52 1Gs4YH-0002YT-Qz mx1.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] Connection reset by peer 2006-12-07 12:34:26 1Gs4Ll-00049D-Hg Remote host mx1.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] closed connection in response to initial connection I haven't bothered to question why as it isn't posing a problem for us, yet. Mike
Checking my logs for today I've had the same issue since midnight and probably yesterday too: 2006-12-07 12:19:26 1Gs4kg-000GHZ-KO Remote host mta.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] closed connection in response to initial connection The company my partner works for has their domain and email with Xtra and they've been having email issues for the last 48 or so hrs, every 4-8 hrs email trickles through. So IMHO i'd say there is a problem xtra wide. Regards Barry

Yes. I do a bit of mail to Xtra each day, and notice that roughly 1 in 6 connection attempts are refused. I originally noticed that this happened when sending a `newsletter' type email (solicited opt-in) out last Tuesday (I think), so wrote it off as some kind of anti-spam thing. I notice that when I telnet (tried just now) to mta.xtra.co.nz on port 25 it refuses roughly 1 in 6 times.
I just trying to contact XTRA's administrators, but no response. I have had a good response back from the corporate side of XTRA, which is assuring.
What is the response from the corporate side? You mention that it is `good', but yet you still feel a need to `escalate' to the list? -- Nathan Ward

It's been a problem over the last week (maybe more). Xtra email server(s) at the ip you mention refusing connections, or the last one I had a few minutes ago was 421 Service not available. I placed a call with Xtra's "Complex Technical Support" a few days ago and they told me that due to the volume of spam they are receiving they have reduced the number of concurrent incoming connections that the servers are allowing. dave
While I think of it, Network Operators who are VoIP capable may wish to use the INOC-DBA service. http://www.pch.net/inoc-dba/ We're on it and wishing there were more NZ operators who were. We could then ring each other and talk about beer. jamie

i would say autonomous networks who are IP capable, with decent OS+ soft phones too can join the fun.

Hi,
I'm possibly about to sign up to the INOC-DBA service, but just wanted to
clarify (as we are setting up an Asterisk server for SIP and PSTN calls) how
would the directory service be set up to call other autonomous systems?
Would it be using an ENUM like DNS service?
Eg:
enum.conf:
---
[general]
search => e164.arpa
search => inoc-dba.dns.server
---
Sounds like an excelent way for NOC staff to easily contact others via
ASN's.
Regards,
Nick Larsen

No, it's even simpler than that. The ASN is the phone number - so you simply send a call to ASN(a)your-inoc-dba-sip-peer. https://www.pch.net/inoc-dba/docs/asterisk-inoc-mini-howto.txt is a pretty good start. Give me a buzz off list if anything doesn't make sense to you. Cheers, Jonny.

A slightly more detailed howto also exists. https://www.pch.net/inoc-dba/docs/asterisk-inoc-howto.txt As for directory service, we have a rather crude xml based directory service. the URL for the directory is http://www.pch.net/inoc-dba/xml-directory/index.php thanks -- gaurab /////////////////////////////////////////////////////+9779851038080 gaurab at lahai dot com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (Darwin) iD8DBQFFePzRSo7fU26F3X0RAowrAKCxmGtl4m73kJcr0+Z7qoWVDRTtZgCg8mhF URdoLozGgMj2G3vsy8B/dfs= =OkkT -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Given that Gaurab is (I believe?) coming out to NZNOG in January, would a presentation/tutorial on using INOC DBA be worthwhile then? Cheers Si
I think it would. I've been contemplating doing one in the past along the lines of: . A live demo of inoc-dba in action . The unpacking and live configuration of an IP phone from DSE (radio shack for those overseas) onto the inoc-dba network. . URL with configs for cisco/linksys/grandstream phones . An example of how to configure the trixbox live CD to connect. We've had powerpoints about inoc in the past and while interesting - they don't get people to actually do it. If you can show people that in less than 5 mins - you can configure a phone you just bought, to be able to talk to the other NOC people in the country, then it's worth it. I'm willing to help with the physicals if Gaurab wants to do the talking. Dean Simon Blake wrote:

Yes, Happy to get it done at NZNOG. no problems. I can bring over the WiFi sip phone as well, to add to the fun. For past few years, at APRICOT and SANOG, we have put an INOC DBA phone near the conference NOC area, both as a way to talk to other NOCs as well as demonstration of the system. Something like that would be good idea for NZNOG as well. I think finding hardware wont' be an big issue at all. thanks -- gaurab /////////////////////////////////////////////////////+9779851038080 gaurab at lahai dot com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (Darwin) iD8DBQFFeP3iSo7fU26F3X0RAn1FAJ9Tkq9+HkYkWE+np1Ix3gJQjL5Z/ACfbBN1 ruvm3Z3nhVu6Jz26Y6OtGaA= =RdG4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
