Can we rig up some of the rules to catch of these spamming signups? Surprised at the silence.
Everyone has gone to Slack. No spamming there

The Slack channel is not as accessbile for the community as the mailing list, nor was it intended to replace the list (as I understand). I think it's important we keep the mailing list alive and usable by keeping it relatively spam free - which, to be honest, it is. There are only a couple of spam messages / year at the moment. I'm happy to help admin the mailing list (removing spam subs and so on) if there is a lack of time from other people. -- Michael
I'm amongst the many who havn't yet been privileged enough to receive an
invite to the Slack room, and I don't think the existence of slack excuses
poor mailing list hygiene... It's not just once, now.
I'm also available to help with list admin.
Mark.

That’s correct, and is noted in the Slack Code of Conduct. I would strongly encourage people to post things here which they want to be widely disseminated. Updates about peering, requests for help with something, etc. Slack is great for discussion and real time problem solving, and is a good resource for sharing things which are not intended to be public. There has been a lot more of that in our little community the last year or so, I think it’s worked very well for fostering discussion a bit more. It’s not great for “broadcast”, and we’re on the free one so it’s terrible for history. The mailing list is great for both those things. I’ll make an effort to remind people to post here if there is stuff which should be more widely shared. There hasn’t been that much of that in the last few years to be honest, even before the Slack thing came along.. but if there is, this list is the best place for it still. This morning I’ve had a few people mail me privately trying to get invited - I would encourage you to get someone who knows you to nominate you first, using the nominate function described in the code of conduct. It’s important we have a bit of a web of trust going. If you are unable to do that, please mail info(a)nznog.org mailto:info(a)nznog.org and give us as much as possible about who you are and who you work for and so on. Please make sure you read the CoC before asking: http://www.nznog.org/slack/slack-code-of-conduct http://www.nznog.org/slack/slack-code-of-conduct -- Nathan Ward
Mark,
As of earlier this morning new subscriptions to the NZNOG mailing list are being moderated. New subscription of an address will require a response to the same automated confirmation request it always has and response to a further manual check.
The intention is purely to block signups for spam purposes, not to limit human subscribers in any new way.
