Re: [nznog] Christchurch Earthquake - Let us know if you need anything...
Sorry I'm all the way up in Sweden but the thought had crossed my mind that bringing up as many cell sites as possible off battery backup would / could save lives if there are still people trapped in buildings with cellphones. Perhaps anyone with knowledge of people with local portable generators could help out (?). Probably messy but if it brings up even a few cell sites in central it could help (maybe this has already been done). Regards, Anton
Both Voda and T/com prioritized getting geni's to effected sites as
top priority early yesterday. At this point I believe all XT sites
that were effected are were not trashed are on Geni where power is
still not back (this was less than a handful), Voda had more sites
down in total from last official media statement I read yesterday.
T/com also have significant number of CDMA towers down/damaged as well
in addition to the XT ones. I have not heard anything out of 2Deg's
that seems somewhat official.

Their blog ( http://blog.2degreesmobile.co.nz/ ) has information about their Chch coverage (it's also linked from their home page): "Mobile coverage on the 2degrees Christchurch network is being restored as generators are connected, although aftershocks and battery power levels continue to prove challenging. "With 2degrees cell sites largely unaffected by the earthquake the main issue has been power supply, as batteries powering some sites have run down over night and during the day. "2degrees spokesman Mat Bolland says generators are being installed throughout the day." -- simon
A little late to mention, but we (Vector) have working diverse network capacity into Revera Datacentre in Christchurch if any is in urgent need. cheers Tony Wicks | Network Architect Team Leader DDI +64 9 978 8328 | Mobile +64 21 965362 The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and may be legally privileged.
