Is there any publicly (& free) accessible dyndns server in NZ? Yup.. didnt help that Ihugs New Fandangled Transparent Proxies just 'suddenly' started ICMPing the crap out of me.. I seem to recall failing to get a straight answer out of Ihug Abuse untill id sent in at least 3 or 4 seperate (and loud) complaints. Ive run the abuse box for a couple of ISPs now Glen - so yes, ive learnt a bit since I stopped using Ihug for my internet access - but one thing I have learnt is not to ignore customers. A couple of decent, polite responses (which may or may not include things like "This is outside of our control, please do not report further abuse of this nature to us") work a lot well than a stoney silence, which used to originate from Ihug Abuse far too often. If you educate your customers theyre less likely to come back to you with the same issues. Ihug Abuse has improved somewhat over the last year or two, fortunately. :) Not bad, especially considering staff turnover. Mark. (I got my Ihug account when I was 16 and barely knew what TCP/IP was. Thatd be unusual - My comms with them has always been that they have to wait for the log files to get parsed, which means the most recent entry is at least half a day old... Since when is admins@ a standard for abuse complaints anyway? :P abuse(a)xtra.co.nz would be the most appropriate address to use. (Im glad they reactivated it, whos bright idea was it to close that box?) Internet Name Protection Pty Ltd

As many of you will be aware there seems to be another bulk snail mail from one Internet Name Protection Pty Ltd to .co.nz name holders offering to register hitherto unregistered names. Such names can be simply registered by them for $NZ125pa ! Oddly the name holder for (internetnameprotection.co.nz) seems to be the Internet Name Group (ING) of St Kilda. ING remain suspended as a Domainz .nz provider. Derek Locke (CEO of Domainz) will be issuing a press statement (hopefully later today) discouraging people from sending ING money or having anything to do with them and I would ask you to give your customers a similar message. Domainz will be urgently investigating what other steps can be taken. Way OT: Employment anyone?

Hi all, I do apologies for this way off topic post. If it's considered a massive no-no then maybe 'employment solicitation' could be explicitly included in the list of unacceptable postings! I'm hoping that by posting to people at the coal face I'll get more response than some of the agencies I've been in touch with! Very briefly then: I have: - just got here from the UK & live in Auckland. - worked for 7 years at a University Computer Centre where I: - built/managed WAN to connect 1300 schools in 2 counties, and a - MAN to connect all Universities in the region to the NREN, - Oh yes, the University LAN. - had to sell the 'Internet' to some IT Managers/Principles! (even AFTER a FREE connection!) I have not got: - Asbestos underpants, - any vendor qualifications ( I consider this an asset!) [I do have a degree though] If you know of any current or forthcoming opportunity in the ISP/Carrier area can you let me know? Or anything else in datacomms for that matter! Can I be useful to you? E-Secure-IT has made a calendar of Australian Telecommunication outages available on their website. Access is free. It gives a monthly/daily overview, ongoingly updated, of most planned and unplanned outages in Australia. In addition it gives a very complete and comprehensive update on all global IT security news. This is an arguement of long standing. In APEC it is known as 'international Internet charging arrangements for services' or ICAIS and in ITU-T as Recommendation D(iii). Precisely the same phenomenon applies to New Zealand and until relatively recently to the whole world, including Europe. Europe now has 'in house' Internet exchanges and a growing volume of indigenous content so that there is less and less reliance on Internet US-centricity. Asia is slowly evolving the same way. Arguments around this matter have been rehearsed on this list previously, when I asked for comment on a New Zealand position to take to the APEC TEL Working Group about two years ago (and received very helpful feedback). My (v. concise) summary of the New Zealand Government position on this matter is as follows: "Noting that NZ has the highest percent of GDP expenditure on telecommunications world-wide (OECD, 2000): we recognise that there is a net economic cost to NZ arising from current charging arrangements, nevertheless, this is not having a perceptible dampening effect on Internet development and use in NZ. Relevant industry opinion in NZ is that there should be no government action taken with respect to the current arrangements." Incidentally, the lack of perceptable effect on Internet development applies throughout Asia as well, in my view. I would love to see a realistic break down of comparative costs to ISPs and to their customers internationally ... I would bet that 90% of end user costs are due to domestic tariff rates and policies.There is now a considerable pile of international policy papers on this matter in the ITU and APEC TEL as well as a number of other international fora. They can be summarised as saying 'no or very little effect, dont regulate' or 'disaster, discrimination, growing digital divide, its not fair, regulate'. Logic argues that there is nothing that can or should be done about it through regulation that would be effective but that does not seem to be having much influence on the international debate. I would be happy to receive (off list) any comments members might want to make on what the NZ Government position should be and I will provide further information on the international debate on request.
