PLANNED IN-ADDR.ARPA NAMESERVER CHANGE This is a courtesy notification of an upcoming change to the nameserver set for the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone. There is no expected impact on the functional operation of the DNS due to this change. There are no actions required by DNS server operators or end users. For more information about this work, please see <http://in-addr-transition.icann.org/>. DETAIL The IN-ADDR.ARPA zone is used to provide reverse mapping (number to name) for IPv4. The servers which currently provide authoritative DNS service for the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone are as follows: A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET B.ROOT-SERVERS.NET C.ROOT-SERVERS.NET D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET F.ROOT-SERVERS.NET G.ROOT-SERVERS.NET H.ROOT-SERVERS.NET I.ROOT-SERVERS.NET K.ROOT-SERVERS.NET L.ROOT-SERVERS.NET M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET On Wednesday 2010-02-16 processing will begin to change the nameserver set to the following, as described in RFC 5855: A.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by ARIN) B.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by ICANN) C.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by AfriNIC) D.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by LACNIC) E.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by APNIC) F.IN-ADDR-SERVERS.ARPA (operated by RIPE NCC) The usual IANA process for a change in the ARPA zone involves a series of technical checks and the gathering of various authorisations, and may take several days to complete. Following this, the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone will be dropped from root servers in two groups: 1. Week of 2011-02-21 -- 2011-02-25 B, C, E, G, I, M 2. Week of 2011-02-28 -- 2011-03-11 A, D, F, H, K, L Individual root server operators will choose a time for the maintenance within their respective window and follow their usual procedures to carry out the change. Prop 94

The APNIC policy proposal 94 allows an operator to put in for new IPv4 space without having to renumber, if they can show that they've used 80% of the space already obtained from their upstream. http://www.apnic.net/policy/proposals/prop-094 That seems bad in two ways 1. It allows 19.99% of IPv4 space to be hoarded. 2. It probably encourages disaggregation, compared with renumbering into this new block. Brian

Facebook - the next phase

Hey all, Just an interesting new phase in Facebook with the new message system. They've enhanced the message systems with a new mashup view, but also have turned on email for Facebook accounts. A while ago they announced Facebook urls: facebook.com/eintellego And in the last couple of days, when you turn on your new messaging system, they issue an email address related to your short-link above. So as of now I have the eintellego(a)facebook.com<mailto:eintellego(a)facebook.com> address which can have email sent to it and replied. Why is this important? Well, this would be the first very direct shot across the bow at Google and will create, almost instantly a competitor to Gmail with a potential of 500 million users. That is quite interesting operationally to nznog members from a consideration perspective. What we're about to see is a domain (facebook.com) with almost no users, turn into one of the biggest senders and receivers of emails world wide. Immediate things that come to mind are the possible abuses of applications sending email on your behalf. Worthy of discussion I think. Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes.
