InternetNZ (or more specifically its Vice-President Rick Shera) noticed a few days ago the possible ramifications of the law where ISPs can be caught in the middle between telcos and customers. Rick has put in a submission to the select cmte. ISPs and others could ask the Cmte Clerk if they can put in a late submission (they were due in by 15th). The Clerk is Marie Alexander, e-mail: SC-Commerce(a)parliament.govt.nz and phone: 64 4 471 9532. InternetNZ will make an oral submission on the bill also. Possibly an interested ISP could ask to be part of the delegation (adds credibility to have actual ISP there). Any examples etc of how this will unfairly penalise ISPs for things not under their control could forward such material onto Rick or Sue Leader. I will volenteer to help. Call me conservative, but I would like to see a very successful small gathering that leaves us all wanting more (option1) rather than a large event that burns out the organisers, pauper the participants and satisfies no-one. I guess I am of the walk before you run camp. I'm not hearing any clear enthusiasm for that. 2/ Seek to have a stand-alone event organised by somebody else. The University of Waikato have made a credible offer to do this. They have experience of event organisation and have a venue which is likely to be suitable. We could accept that offer, or 3/ it may be possible to persuade one of the companies which have offered to assist with organisation to take on a primary role in that work. My impression is that NANOG rotate organisational work among a variety of corporate "hosts" as their gatherings move to different North American centres. 4/ Run an event within a larger event. In practice for this year this would mean the UniForum NZ conference. This is scheduled (with a final choice of hotel pending) to take place in Auckland in early to mid July. (The school holidays run 29 June - 14 July.) The convenor has suggested that NZNOG run a stream over a Thursday and Friday, with format and room requirements negotiable. The main conference seems likely to run Thursday - Sunday. There would be an option for people to register only for the Thursday and Friday. In any case, we would be aiming to keep under the sort of cost figure Roger De Salis has mentioned. I believe we could now proceed by accepting one of options 1, 2 or 4 and at the same time appoint a group of people to liaise with others involved and to coordinate a programme. Or we could appoint a group and leave the choice among options 2, 3 and 4 to them. Thoughts? (Cheap) Wireless bridging options ?

Hi Wireless guru's (he says hopefully :) In the next month or so I'm in need of a simple Wireless Bridge setup to temporarily Bridge the Ethernet's of two buildings for about 2 days. The distance is under 500 metres, and it must be bridged, not routed. I already have on hand a variety of old and new 802.11b wireless gear (Lucent/Orinoco) so I'd like to use what I have if possible. In particular I've got a couple of Lucent Wavepoint-II access points sitting around spare. The catch is that the normal access point firmware will not bridge between two access points, it will only connect to client stations. The client cards I have are also Lucent (Silver) cards, and those cannot do bridging as a client, as either the driver or firmware (probably the firmware) on the card doesn't allow it. (Believe me, I've tried, unless I've missed some trick :-) So I seem to have a few options: 1) Get the "Remote Outdoor Router" firmware and enabling keys for both access points - this would allow them to bridge two networks, but the cost is high - a bit of searching on the net and the lowest price I could find was around $800 NZ *each*. ~ $1600 for something that is only going to be needed for a couple of days is out of the question. 2) Some trick to be able to bridge with a Silver card being used in a "client" role. (No luck finding anything yet) 3) Abandon the Lucent cards and find some other card whose drivers allow bridging, and set up a linux machine (or linux boot disk) that will bridge between that card and the ethernet. Assuming the brand of card will connect to the Lucent Access point, the access point can do the bridging at the other end. If that wouldn't work, I'd need two of that kind of card and two PC's...(the PC's and the Linux boot disk aren't a problem, I'm pretty fluent in Linux) 4) Something else ? Any suggestions from those a bit more versed in Wireless techniques gratefully received.. NASA Television Streaming - Multicast or Unicast

Hello All, I've been trying to stream NASA Television into our television repeater CH 39 UHF here in Auckland for some time now. This will reduce the potential risk of radio hams losing CH 39 UHF. Raido Hams have recently lost 440 MHz to 449.750 MHz our previous TV reapeater input frequency. I know that the CH 39 UHF power levels are low with new linking equiptment being constructed and purchased.A power up grade is on the cards also. We have a high power broadcast tv transmitter but nowhere to install it without complaints (resource consents, power and site costs etc).We are unable to run this high power transmitter at our current site as there is no room for it. The club arrangement is a non profit order.This is a problem also. I hope this year will be an expansion year for CH 39 UHF. Currently we are under pressure such as the MED,RSM UHF TV call to for expressions of interest for community tv licences (CH 35 to 42).The other option is to apply for an ad-hoc licence after the first round of community licences have been let.If there are any left.Yes,ad-hoc as the MED,RSM call it. The CH 39 UHF Television Radio Ham exercise runs at low cost. Were trying to promote NASATV and encourage the public of all ages to get educated and have fun on the internet and internet ham radio. NASATV has many web sites constantly informing the world wide public to gain access and learn something in their lives.These web sites are often transmitted via CH 39 UHF and hopefully promote and encourage people to become aware of the need to have internet comunications.Get connected and live again. I see this as a win,win for all. 7kbps to 13kbps is not what broadband is about.The buffering is on and off constantly. My Jetstart service has some what been reduced ( some services disabled,Load Balancing ,IP assend IP desend,Multicasting disabled etc ). I have two Jetstart accounts with Telecom Xtra. All I really need is a quality multicast connection at no less than 64kbps.I can't de-compress 28kbps well enough to an acceptable level,tv-out full screen etc.100Kbps is even better but too costly at present.300kbps flys and de-compresses well.Its very expensive and still stops and starts with no connection or 7kbps to 16kbps with no picture and audio breaking up. Whats missing in customer contracts is the information disclosing what features (hardware or filters and services) are disabled or dis-allowed.A customer believes that they are purchasing full access to where they intend to connect.
